Suburban model sw6de O20602270 The element.. outside mechanism caught on fire. Do I have to replace the entire tank or can i replace the outer mechanism.

I suppose if the tank hasn't been damaged at all that you could just replace the heating element, but that's assuming that there isn't something else going on that caused the unit to catch fire. It looks like the original one used in that water heater was discontinued and replaced with 520900. So I do believe that Camco Water Heater Element - Screw-In - 1500 Watts - 120 Volts Item # CAM02143 will work.
Another option is Camco RV Replacement Water Heater Element - Universal - 1,500W/120V
Item # CAM04363. Both of these heating elements are designed for water tanks with 8" minimum tank diameter.
