Compatibility of Curt Echo Brake Controller on Vehicle Equipped with OEM Brake Controller
Updated 12/11/2012 | Published 12/10/2012 >
Question:
We have a trailer that we do tow with multiple vehicles, only one of which is equipped with a brake controller. The Curt Echo looks like a good solution for us but, I want to check with regard to the vehicle that already has a controller. Can/will the Curt Echo controller be bypassed if connected to a vehicle that already has a built in brake controller?

Expert Reply:
The Curt # C51180 will work just fine with a vehicle that is equipped with an OEM or aftermarket brake controller. The Echo will not receive any output from the existing controller, as the Echo doesn't have a pin to receive any output from the controller. The existing controller will not even know a trailer is connected.
You will need to make sure that the 12-volt auxiliary power feed to the 7-way is functional. I've linked you to a video that will walk you through how the Echo works.
