Question:
I am looking for a weight distribution hitch with sway control. I am driving a 2025 Dodge Durango R/T and towing a trailer with total weight of 4500-5000 lbs. How do I know which weight distribution hitch to purchase?

Hey John, great question! The right weight distribution hitch for your setup typically depends on the tongue weight of your trailer. Is that 4,500-5,000 lbs the dry weight, something you measured, or the GVWR? Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight. Assuming that is the GVWR we're looking at 450-750 lbs of tongue weight which is a pretty wide range. You also have to account for the weight of anything you're carrying behind the rear axle of your Durango since that adds to tongue weight as well.
To take all of the guess work out of this, I recommend the Weigh Safe True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch # WS79VR. Not only is this a great system, it has a built in scale so you can get the perfect setup every time. The Weigh Safe is also incredibly easy to use with their app. You will input your information and then adjust the lead screw on the head as needed.
A lot of the time people are much heavier when they head out to camp for the weekend fully loaded, and lighter as they come back, so you can easily adjust the Weigh Safe WDH to account for this. A lot of other systems require adding washers to adjust so what ends up happening is you're done camping, the trailer is lighter, it probably needs to be adjusted, but who wants to take the time to mess with all of that? You just want to go home. With the Weigh Safe you turn that screw, get the perfect setup, and you're on the way.
