Is it necessary to have a diode in the wiring to use the factory lights on a 2016 jeep wrangler? And if so why? This is for flat towing plugged into tow vehicles trailer plug and toads trailer plug both 4 wire flat plugs.

In order to flat-tow a 2016 Jeep Wrangler you'll need a flat-tow wiring harness and for this you have a few options. These options included a set of magnetic lights such as the Heavy Duty Magnetic Tow Lights part # TL21RK or diode wiring kit that uses the factory tail lights like the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles part # HM56200.
The diodes are required because they stop the back flow of electricity so there isn't any damaged to the RV's tail lights. I recommend the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit because it's plug-n-play and comes with the 4-way plug you need.
