Is Transmission Cooler Required for Towing Trailer with 2015 Ford Explorer without Tow Package

Question:
what about the 2000 lb tow rating for a 2015 Explorer not equipped with a OEM tow pkg? Do you have to install an aftermarket trans cooler in the non- tow packaged equipped 2015 Explorer when you install an Curtis aftermarket hitch? I didnt see a trans cooler listed on your list of complete setup items. Please clarify. Thanks

An aftermarket transmission cooler is rarely ever a requirement when towing a trailer, and that is the case on your 2015 Ford Explorer after adding the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13386. I think you might be wondering about the 4,000 pound towing weight capacity on the Curt hitch, and how it relates to the lower 2,000 pound limit on our Explorer without the tow package.
It is important to note that you will always be limited by the weakest component of your towing setup. An aftermarket transmission cooler (or any other add-on component) will not increase the towing capacity of your Explorer so that it equals the capacity of the Explorer that's equipped with the factory tow package. Even though the Curt hitch has a 4,000 pound towing weight capacity, you still need to adhere to the 2,000 pound limit on the vehicle, regardless of what you add to it.
With all of that being said, adding a transmission cooler is still a really great idea and it will definitely provide benefits with respect to performance and increasing the lifespan of the vehicle's transmission. For your Ford Explorer the Derale Series 8000 # D13502 is a great option. This plate-fin style cooler uses 3/4" wide turbulator plates for really efficient cooling and measures 11" wide, 7-1/4" tall, and 7/8" deep. I just recommend making sure you have sufficient space between the grille and AC condensor core for mounting.
To tow a trailer you will also need to add a wiring harness if you haven't already. I highly recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118540, which will plug right into a factory port under the vehicle on the passenger side. This will provide you with a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights.
I have attached an installation video that you can follow along with.
