How to Install a TranSMIssion Cooler on a 2001 Ford Explorer

Today on our 2001 Ford Explorer we'll be installing the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler. Part number D13503. We've gone ahead and located a spot to mount the transmission cooler. Now we just need to gain access. To do this we'll simply remove the front bumper. To remove the front bumper we'll first unplug the electrical, which for this application will be the front fog lights.

Simply pull back on the locking tab and remove the connector from the fog lights. Now we'll need to remove the four nuts securing the bumper to the frame. There will be two on each side. Each process we do here on one side will get repeated identically on the opposite side. Now with the four nuts removed we can go ahead and remove the bumper and set it aside. Now you can see it exposes the whole front area behind the front grill.

Next we'll go ahead and take our cooler and use two self tapping screws to attach it to the front radiator support frame. First we'll go ahead and loosen up the line coming from the manufacturers cooler. Run it over to the new cooler and then cut off any excess line that won't be needed. Now we can go ahead and attach it to the new cooler and secure it. With that completed we'll go ahead and take the new line and attach it to the manufacturers cooler. Now we'll go ahead, route it over to the new cooler and then cut off any excess from the new line.

With that completed we'll go ahead and slide on a couple new clamps then slip the hose on to the new cooler. With that installed, we can now go ahead and tighten down our clamps. Now that we've got everything secured. Quick tech recommendation is to go ahead and start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature. In most cases you'll check the transmission with the engine running. Consult your owners manual for proper checking and fluid fill procedures.

Now let's go ahead and reinstall the front bumper. We'll simply do it in reverse order of which we removed it. We'll reinstall the nuts securing the bumper. Tighten them down and then reinstall the fog light wiring. With that done this will complete the install of the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit. Part number D13503 on our 2001 Ford Explorer. .

Our aftermarket transmission coolers basically just add more cooling power to your OEM transmission and they aren't meant to replace it. So the output of your OEM cooler will go to the input of this aftermarket, and then the output of the aftermarket will go back to the main line (where your OEM output was initially connected). I've attached a helpful article with more details on this for you to check out.
