Is Pre-Set or Proportional Braking System Better for Flat Towing

Question:

I saw another post about flat towing a RAM 3500. I agree with everything except the braking system. Large motorhomes that are capable of towing 10,000 or 15,000 lb vehicles will most likely have two or three stage engine brakes. Most of the time not even touching the brake pedal. I would think an inertia based system would work best for this combination. What do you say??? Thanks

I absolutely recommend a proportional, inertia-driven braking system when flat towing any vehicle, much less a heavier one like your Ram 3500 because of exactly the reasons you mentioned. These types of systems don't rely solely on the brake light to engage the towed vehicle brakes but will simply send back a proportionate amount of power based on the vehicle's deceleration.

The Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR is a really great portable option that uses its integrated inertia sensor to detect deceleration and use a proportionate amount of power to apply the brakes in the towed vehicle. This particular unit features sensitivity controls so you can adjust how aggressive you want the braking to be and its in cab monitor keeps you alerted to any potential issues.
