Question:

I am looking at the Demco A frame coupler ez latch...silver....Item DMI14793-52 Questions: 1. I currently have a welded on coupler....I assume I can carefully grind it off and then install the new coupler...correct? Any risks from grinding if I am careful not to grind the trailer frame? It is a 3x2 inch frame....5x8 foot utility trailer...3000# single axle. The heaviest load I haul is firewood...2500 pounds. 2. I understand I need 6 1/2 inch bolts....grade 5. How long do the bolts need to be? Do I use regular nuts....lock nuts....are washers needed? 3. I like the ez latch feature....but wonder if it is as secure as the traditional system? As well....I am a bit concerned that bolt on is not as strong as welded. Any suggestions on the safe use of the ez latch? Thanks,

I'd be happy to help you out with your questions on the Demco A-Frame Trailer Coupler # DM14793-52.

1. Yes, you can remove your old welded on coupler by using a grinder to cut the welds. Another popular option is to use a torch to cut the welds but either way is fine.

2. The 1/2" grade 5 bolts are correct and the length really just depends on your trailer frame. You basically just need to make sure they are long enough to reach through both the coupler and your frame and still have enough room for the nut. Using a washer wouldn't be a bad idea and my contact at Demco said to use lock nuts for this.

3. The eZ-Latch system is just as secure as a traditional system. The hitch ball will not release until you physically [pull up on the release lever. Demco still provides a way to lock the coupler (to discourage theft) as well. I recommend the Hitch Lock # e98887 to do so.

Weld on is definitely stronger than bolts if done properly. As long as you are using the proper hardware though you can safely and confidently go up to the 10K weight capacity of this coupler, provided that your trailer is rated that high. Since you said the most you will be carrying is 2,500 lbs you have nothing to worry about!
