Can The etrailer Sleeve-Lock A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5196-B Be Bolted To The Trailer Tongue

Updated 02/18/2026 | Published 06/16/2024

Question:

Can this be drilled and bolted to the frame? Im attaching to 1/8inch thick 1-1/2inch x 2-1/2inch steel, and would use 2 grade 5 or grade 8 bolts run vertically on each side.

Hey Fred,

The etrailer Sleeve-Lock A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5196-B wasn't designed to be bolted on so I can not confirm that drilling and bolting it to the trailer tongue would be acceptable. I will say that most couplers designed to bolt on to the tongue in this weight capacity would use six 3/8" grade 5 bolts, with three bolts per side running horizontally.

If you'd like a coupler that is designed to be bolted on the Demco A-Frame Trailer Coupler w/ Jack Hole # DM14793-52 would be a great alternative.

Hey Fred, did you end up going with the Demco A-Frame coupler for your trailer? Knowing how it worked out could help others trying to decide between welding or bolting their setup.

Hi Jenny: Apologies for the late response! I did buy it and just bolted it to my frame--2 bolts on each side of rectangular tube steel. It's just a small 4' x 8' utility trailer, so not a lot of stress on the bolts. Has worked just fine so far. All the best, Fred
