Question:

does the 4 pin plug on the spring cord have a grove that assures its plugged correctly and does it LOCK on the spring loaded cover plate ???

When installing the 4-Way Round connection of the Hopkins Endurance Flex-Coil Trailer Connector Adapter # HM47043 you want to make sure that the thick square part is facing the ground as you can see in the attached photo. I have also attached a photo of a typical 4-Way Round connection for both the trailer and vehicle that you can use as a reference.

Typically a spring-loaded lip on a cover will help keep the connector from accidentally falling out. I can guarantee this as I don't know what specific connector you have or what kind of shape the spring is in but normally the 4-Way Round is only able to be removed by hand.
