Question:
What does using an extension receiver do. Why is it recommended not to use one?

Expert Reply:
The use of a hitch extender like the Curt Hitch Extender part # C45791 on a bike rack like the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack part # Y02443 is not a good idea because it moves the weight away for the vehicle further which then in turn reduces the weight capacity of the trailer hitch. The use of the Curt Hitch Extender or one similar for that matter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of your vehicle's trailer hitch by 50%.
If the reason that you will be wanting to use the hitch extender is so you can clear the rear spare tire then I recommend you take a look at the RockyMounts BackStage 2 Bike Platform Rack part # RKY10002 which should not only clear the rear spare tire but will also allow you to open the rear hatch on your Jeep without having to remove the bike rack or any bikes.
I have attached a review video of this bike rack being used on a similar Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for you as well as a photo.
