Do I need a New Star Nut When Trimming the Replacement Ladder Support Peg 8531-B

Question:
If I trim the 12 inch peg to 5 1/2 inches at the plastic cap end, do I have to buy a new expansion nut for that end of the pipe?

If you cut the replacement ladder support part # 8531-B down to 5-1/2 inches you do not need a new expansion nut. You can remove the plastic cap from the peg, push the star shaped nut down (pictured in the photo) and cut the peg. Then replace the plastic cap.
