The piece of the switch that pulled out is keyed, so that it can only be inserted back into the switch one way. Try rotating the piece, eventually you will find the position in which it will go in. You will also want to make sure that the pin was not damaged.

This forum was a life saver for me this weekend. Accidentally pulled out the breakaway pin when I wasn't following my mental checklist for unhooking my goose neck horse trailer. Had my horse at a weekend event. When I tried to put the pin in, it only went in half way. Google brought me here. I was convinced that the pin could only go in one of two ways. When neither of those work I tried rotating. Turns out I was only a quarter turn off. Pin when back in with ease and my horse and I were on our way home!
