Question:

A while back I hooked up a 7 pin wire harness to my 04 Titan by splicing into the rear brake lights wiring for towing a boat without trailer brakes. I now want to tow a travel trailer so what steps would take from here to use a plug and play brake controller because of the non factory 7 pin?

The first thing you are going to want to do to install a brake controller on your 2004 Nissan Titan is look for a brake controller plug-in port under the driver side kick panel (see video). If you do have this port then the process to install a brake controller is going to be relatively easy but if you do not have this port then a bit more work will be involved.

For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160. If you have the brake controller plug-in port then you can use the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers part # 3050-P but if not you will need to use the harness that comes with the brake controller.

If you do have the brake controller plug-in port then all you will need to do is look in the harness that leads to the tail lights for a brown/white and a red wire. The brown/white wire is for the brake output and red wire is for 12 volt power. Once you find these wires then you will just need to connect them to the back of the 7-way.

If you do not have the brake controller plug-in port or you cannot find the above two wires then you will need to run these wires yourself with part # 10-2-1. There will be one wire that goes into the cab for the brake output and one that goes to the battery for 12 volt power. You will then need to obtain the red/green stop light switch wire from the brake pedal and run the ground wire to the negative battery terminal.
