Compatibility of SKS Lock Cores with Older Powderhound Roof Ski Carrier

Updated 11/06/2018 | Published 11/05/2018

Question:

Hello, I have an old Yakima Powderhound Ski rack that I bought used. It didnt come with locks so I recently purchased SKS lock cores only to find out that when I install them, they dont connect to anything that actually locks. Hopefully the pictures help show what Im talking about, but on the back of the lock core, there is this little metal nub that Im fairly sure should go into a metal tab that spins around to actually lock the rack. But this piece is missing. I have searched all over and of course talked to Yakima, but they just wanted me to buy a new rack! They said they dont sell this replacement part, but Im not sure that I described it very well to them. I came across this picture of the replacement lock housing and fastener for Yakima Q-tower and wonder if I could take out the current housing, put this in, and maybe get this to lock. Please tell me if you think this might work, or if you happen to know what it is that I need. Thanks!

It is possible that the production date of your pre-owned Yakima Powderhound ski carrier makes it incompatible with the current generation of Yakima's SKS lock cores. The SKS locks came into play around the year 2000, so if your Powderhound is older than that it will not take SKS cores.

Your photo did not make it through to us but if you would be so kind as to reply to this email with a photo of the complete rack and a photo of the part where you tried to install the SKS lock core I will be glad to confirm with Yakima if retro-fitting locks is possible.

For reference I linked our main page for roof rack ski carriers from all of the brands we carry.
