Trailer Lights Wont Work After Wiring Harness Install on a 2001 Lexus RX300

Published 10/23/2018

Question:

I just installed 55245 part is still not working, reading that it may need some sort of converter box to control that wiring harness looking for just the plug and play converter box. the plug is located in the rear near spare tire.

There are two types of wiring harnesses for your 2001 Lexus RX300, one if you have the factory tow package and one if you do not have the factory tow package. In order to determine if you have the factory tow package you would need to call the manufacturer and provide them with your VIN as they will be the only ones that will know whether or not the circuits are active for the factory tow package.

What we run into is that customers will find the factory tow plug on their vehicle and then automatically assume they have the factory tow package so they can use the plug-in wiring harness. However, most vehicles have the physical plug but only the models equipped with the factory tow package will have the circuits ran to the plug.

If you have called the manufacturer and they have confirmed you do have the factory tow package then the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C55245 is absolutely the wiring harness you need but if you do not have the factory tow package then you will need to use the Curt Upgraded Circuit Protected Powered Tail Light Converter part # C59496 instead and this option will require hardwiring. They don't make any sort of plug-in converter that is a supplement to the harness you have.

Don't forget to plug in the fuse if you are using the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C55245 and check the other trailer tow fuses as well per the install and owner's manual. If you can confirm whether or not you have the factory tow package by calling the dealer I would be glad to offer further assistance.
