It sounds like your system needs a backflow preventer like the Camco RV Fresh Water System Backflow Preventer - 1/2" Diameter - Brass # CAM23303. This allows water to flow only in one direction so that your fresh water tank doesn't fill up from water backfilling into it from your city water connection.
If your connection requires a double male pipe thread connector then # P23415LFVP will serve you well.
