I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2016 Jeep Compass and found that the towing capacity will range from 1,000 to 2,000 pounds depending on what the vehicle is equipped with. For example if you have the 2.0L engine the maximum trailer weight is 1,000 pounds but if you have the 2.4L engine with the trailer tow package then the maximum weight is 2,000 pounds.
I highly recommend checking your copy of the owner's manual to verify the capacity for your specific model Compass. You can also visit a local Jeep dealer with your VIN and they will be able to tell you the exact number.
Since it sounds like you will be doing some towing you will need a trailer hitch and wiring (if you do not already have them). For a trailer hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75712. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your Jeep and will use existing holes in its frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening perfect for use with a ball mount for towing or for other hitch-mounted accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers.
I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.
For trailer wiring I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118539. This custom harness will install by plugging into factory ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights. This will give you a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights. I have again attached an installation video for you to check out.
In order to tow a trailer you will also need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup, along with a link that will take you to our available selection. I have also included a couple articles on towing that you might find helpful.
