Why is Trailer Tire Wearing on the Inside Only?
Updated 07/24/2018 | Published 07/22/2018 >
Question:
My trailer tires are wearing on the inside and only last about 800 miles. They only wear when trailer is pulled at highway speeds. Load rating on tires is good, trailer not overloaded, axle is not bent. Would wider tires solve this. Current have 145, but trailer can accommodate up to 175 wide tires.

Expert Reply:
A wider tire will not solve the issue of your tires wearing down on the inside only. If your trailer tire is wearing on the inside but is not overloaded and your suspension is aligned properly the only other issue that can be causing this is the tires not being inflated to their max psi consistently.
On trailer tires you always want to inflate the tire to the maximum cold psi, which will give you the best performance, allowing the tire to wear more slowly and give you optimum gas mileage. The psi that you should inflate your tires to will be found on the tire's sidewall.
