Question:
If the breakaway is accidentally activated left hooked up when pulling away how do you reset the system and does it need to be replaced?

If you have electric brakes then the only thing you will need to do to reset a breakaway system would be to place the pin back into the switch. This will then release the brakes and allow the trailer to roll freely. You will not need to replace it unless any of the components are damaged. If they were damaged then I recommend the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit part # 20099 as a replacement.
If you have hydraulic brakes then the process is a bit more involved and will be dependent on which brake actuator you have. You will need to check the owner's manual of the brake actuator for the process to reset this system. Also, since you drove with the breakaway pin pulled you may want to remove the drum and check to make sure there is still adequate pad life left.
