Continuous Voltage on Trailer Connector Pins with Ignition Off
Updated 05/17/2018 | Published 05/16/2018 >
Question:
I installed a new Curts 4-pin converterS0601U-R1 on my 2014 Dodge Caravan three years ago and it has worked well. When I plugged the boat in this year, the tail lights stayed on continuously when the van engine and all lights were off. After a short time the harness connection with the boat becomes too hot to touch. Testing the voltage on the van side of the harness with the engine and all lights off I have about 9 volts on all three pins. The wiring looks to be in perfect shape. None of the normal signal and brake functionality works. The ground seem to be in solid metal and in good shape. Could this just be a failed converter? Other options?

The issue you are describing does indeed sound like a failed converter box. It is not uncommon for converter boxes to fail over time especially if they are not properly secured. You will need to replace the entire unit in order to get your trailer lights functioning properly again. Through our experience, we have found that Tekonsha wiring products last much longer and experience fewer problems than most other brands.
In order to replace the trailer wiring harness on your 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan, I recommend using the https://www.etrailer.com/tv-install-trailer-wiring-2013-chrysler-town-and-country-c56331.aspx. This harness is almost entirely plug and play. The square connectors will install behind the taillights and you will then need to ground the white wire and run the black wire to the vehicle's battery with the included fuse holder.
I have attached an install video on the above harness for you as well.
