What is the length/ span that the pin should have?

It sounds like you are referring to a coupler latch lock that is used to lock the latching mechanism of the coupler onto the hitch ball. If this is the case then you would want to use a 1/4" diameter pin like part # e98886. I have attached a photo of where this pin will need to be installed on the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer part # Y08107 for you as well.

There really isn't a standard length for the coupler latch lock but part # 7691 has a usable length of 2" so I would say that is a good estimate. If for some reason you would like a coupler latch lock with more usable space then you can use part # e98888 which has a usable length of 3-3/8".
