Weight Distribution System With Empty Trailer
Published 02/09/2018 >
Question:
I was looking at an Equal-I-zer hitch for my 24foot enclosed trailer Ive been watching different videos and reading and I havent seen anyone ask the question where to set the hitch for an enclosed trailer. My trailer is setup for camping and we go to swap meets so if I pack it up and go for the weekend on the return trip it will be less weight do I need to readjust the hitch? I dont know that Ill have access to a perfectly level spot to do so, and that seems like a lot of added time to the trip. Is it necessary to adjust for an empty trailer? Thanks!

Weight distribution systems have a total tongue weight rating range. When you use weight distribution, you need to account for the loaded tongue weight of your trailer along with any cargo behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle. Ideally, you want to be in the middle of this range when loaded.
When unloaded, it is ideal to fall within that range as well, but that isn't always possible. With a 24 foot enclosed trailer, you most likely will still have enough tongue weight to utilize your system when unloaded, but you do have the option of removing the system if it provides too rough a ride when unloaded.
For instance the Equal-I-zer # EQ37100ET has a total tongue weight range between 600 and 1000 lbs. So you may have a loaded weight around 900 lbs and an unloaded weight around 650 and it would still utilize this system well for sway control and stability. If the tongue weight were to drop to 450 when empty, it may be wise to remove the system.
If you have more specific numbers, I can give you a recommendation for your system.
