Question:

Im looking at the Yakima Ridgeback 4 and wondering if I have to use the crossbar adapter for step through framed bikes or if it can be used safely without? I read about keeping bikes levelinch but is that important? Why is it important if so? Sorry Im a novice when it comes to bike-transport. Of the 4 bikes we have, 3 are of the step-through configuration: my wifes, my daughters and my sons since hes only 9 it was easier for him to get on and off of this style. Also if the crossbar is recommended, whats the best bang-for-your buck adapter available for the Ridgeback 4 since Ill need 3? Thanks!

An adapter bar is typically needed for children's bikes and those with step through frames on hanging-style bike racks like excellent Yakima RidgeBack 4 Bike Rack # Y02458 that you referenced. The adapter bar is going to provide a horizontal mounting point by attaching to the bike's seat post and handlebar stem post. As you mentioned in your question, this will allow you to carry the bikes level. Transporting the bikes in a level position is important in terms of ground clearance, as a bike that is tilted to one side or another might come close to contacting the road when traveling. Carrying the bikes level will also simply allow for a more secure and stable connection to the bike rack, resulting in less movement and bounce in transport.

To use on your three bikes, I recommend the Swagman Deluxe Bike Frame Adapter # 64005.
