Question:
My 2014 Silverado came with a 7-pin towing package sans the brake controller. There is a four wire pigtail for this truck that will have to be hard wired into a controller. Do I have to purchase a controller without a plug or can I just cut the plug off of a controller I buy?

You can certainly install a trailer brake controller, such as the excellent Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885, to your 2014 Chevy Silverado using the factory pigtail harness that came with the truck. The brake controller will include a pigtail harness that will plug into the controller and have bare wires on the other end. You can simply hardwire your existing harness to them.
On the brake controller wires white is for ground, blue is brake output to the trailer connector, black is 12 volt power and red is for the stop/brake light switch.
Another option if you would rather not hard wire anything is to simply add the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3016. This adapter is confirmed to fit your Silverado. One end will plug directly to the existing port beneath the dash and the other will plug right into the brake controller.
