The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

The Curt part # C17057 that you referenced is most likely going to be rated too high for the weight of your trailer as it has a tongue weight range of 1,000 lb to 1,400 lb.

I looked up towing capacities for your 2005 Chevy Colorado and it's max looks to be 4,000 lbs if properly equipped. That would meant that for a similar system rated similarly to your vehicle you would want the part # EQ37060ET as it has a max tongue weight of 500 lbs.

Yes, you could use the weight distribution with either vehicle you mentioned. Due to slight differences in the stiffness of your rear suspension you may have to use slightly different spring bar tension in either. The part # C17050 you mentioned (our part number is slightly different), would also be a viable option too. This is a round bar setup and the other one is a trunnion. Trunnions typically offer better ground clearance so they are what we recommend higher.
