Expert Reply:
A 4-Way flat connector has the white wire for ground, brown wire for running lights, yellow wire for left turn and brake, and green wire for right turn and brake.
The Peterson Round Trailer Tail Light, part # 431800, is a three function light and has two wires coming out of the rear. The brown wire is for running lights and the red wire is for turn signal and brake. The light is grounded to the trailer by the mounting studs on the light. The lights have to be mounted to the metal trailer frame.
The white wire from the 4-Way connector will be attached to a good, clean ground on the trailer frame. The brown wire from the 4-Way will go to the brown wires on the two tail lights (one on each side) that will be on your trailer. The yellow wire on the 4-Way will go to the red wire on the left side tail light and the green wire on the 4-Way will go to the red wire on the right side tail light.
I am including a link to a FAQ page that will show you the colors and functions of the wires on a trailer.
