Question:
How can I tell if the hitch on my Toyota Matrix is a class I or class II?

There are a few ways to tell if you have a Class I hitch. Your hitch should have a sticker with the weight ratings, that indicate if it is a Class I hitch. A Class I hitch will have a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs.
The other way to tell is, on a Class I hitch, there will be a small dent or punch in the receiver behind the hitch pin hole. If your hitch has this punch, it is a Class I hitch. The reason the punch is there, is to prevent customers from using Class II or Class II accessories or adapters like the Hitch Adapter, part # 80303, that are not compatible with Class I hitches.
Also, on the end of Class I hitches, there is no metal collar surrounding the receiver opening.
You will want to check your owners manual to make sure never to exceed the towing or tongue weight limits of your Toyota Matrix.
I have linked an FAQ Article on trailer hitch classes and a video review on trailer hitch classes.
