Morning Have an old atlantis cargo box with mounting grips. Can the cargo box be mounted on thule square bars without use of cradles? Are the cradles absolutely necessary for mounting on bars? Thank you

The Quick Grip Cradles # TH8523387001 referenced in your question will go underneath the crossbars on your vehicle. When the knob is turned on the Quick Grip Mounts # TH05738, the clamps will close around the cradle and press it against the crossbar. The cradles are needed to provide a secure and safe connection to the roof rack crossbars.
These come with a quantity of 1, so you will need one for each of the Quick Grip Mounting Assemblies on your Thule Atlantis Cargo Box.
