Compatibility of Fifth-Wheel Hitches with Sidewinders on Ram 2500 with Fifth-Wheel Prep Package
Published 08/08/2017 >
Question:
Can you use any fifth wheel hitch in the bed or does it have to be specific for the sidewinder? I am purchasing a 2500 Ram with the fifth wheel prep option and they also have a hitch option with no rails. Will this be compatible

The hitch does not have to be specific to the Sidewinder; however, certain fifth-wheel hitches are not compatible with Sidewinders. Sidewinders cannot be used with a 5th wheel hitch that mounts to a gooseneck hitch, the Curt Q or A series hitches, or any automatic sliding hitches. If you use a traditional sliding hitch, the hitch must be kept in the towing position and should not be moved into the turning position, as this will put the pin weight too far behind the rear axle, causing clearance issues with the tailgate.
There are below-bed hitch options that can be used with Sidewinders, however, such as the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package, # RP30918. The fifth-wheel prep option for your 2500 Ram won't in itself cause a compatibility issue.
