Minimum Amount of Wire Rope that has to be On Dutton-Lainson Heavy Duty Brake Winch DL10770

Question:

My jet ski lift is only 8 feet and I have 25 feet of 1/4inch DL wire rope. How much length should I use for the winch? Is there a minimum amount that must be on the winch to make it hold the jet ski up?

There is a minimum amount of line that should be on the drum when using Dutton-Lainson Heavy Duty Brake Winch, TUFFPLATE Finish, Self-Locking, 1-1/8" Drum - 1,500 lbs. Item # DL10770. The wire rope will need to be wrapped at least 3 times around the drum.

The circumference of the drum on this winch is about 3-1/2 inches (diameter of 1-1/8 x pi) so 3 times around the drum would be about 10-1/2 inches. Honestly the 25 feet of cable will be perfectly fine and not trimming it will help keep it from fraying.
