How to Select Correct Weight Distribution System for Rockwood Toy Hauler Tent Trailer

Updated 06/21/2017 | Published 06/20/2017

Question:

Id like to get Equalizer 600/6000 hitch for my new tent trailer with toy hauler platform on front Rockwood 232ESP . The trailer frame is 10. Is there link plates for the sway control bracket that will fit a 10inch frame or will I need to drill the frame to mount the brackets.

The key to selecting a weight distribution/sway control system (WD/SC) is knowing the actual tongue weight (TW) of the loaded trailer and to this figure adding the weight of anything in the tow vehicle that sits behind the rear axle, such as a generator or cooler. This cargo will act just like trailer TW and so it needs to be accounted for. We offer a TW scale # e99044 to simplify measuring.

Ideally this total TW falls right near the middle of the operating range for the chosen WD/SC system. For instance, the Equal-I-zer # EQ37060ET that you referenced works over a TW range from 200- to 600-lbs so it would be ideal for 400-lbs of total TW. Based on the design of your Rockwood tent trailer with its up-front toy hauler platform I suspect your actual TW will be far higher than this, but measuring will confirm.

There are no bolt-on frame brackets for the Equal-I-zer systems but Reese and Curt both offer such items, parts # RP58305 and # C17005, that allow installation of WD/SC systems on tall trailer frames like yours. Reese's Strait-Line # RP66072, rated for TW from 200- to 600-lbs, can be installed using these bolt-on brackets. I suggest checking with Rockwood (using the trailer's VIN) before drilling into the frame.

A helpful article and our main page for WD/SC are linked.
