How to Select Correct Ball Mount to Keep Pop-Up Camper Trailer Level When Hitched

Question:

I am driving a 2017 nissan frontier that i measure from the ground to the top of the hitch and it is 18.5. the pop up camper i will be towing is also 18.5 inches from the ground. I know i need a ball that is 2inch in diameter. Camper weighs about 1800 lbs. and hitch weight is about 180lbs. What type of ball hitch and should i get? and what type of ball?

When selecting a ball mount and 2-inch hitch ball for towing your pop-up camper you will want to choose a ball mount that allows the hitched trailer to remain level. The article I linked for you shows how to choose the right 2-inch ball mount with the correct rise or drop to keep your trailer level. Level trailers tow much better.

I linked our page for 2-inch ball mounts, some of which include the hitch ball, such as Curt # C45036 which offers 2-inches of drop. If you choose a separate ball mount and hitch ball be sure that the ball has the correct shank diameter and length for the ball mount. For example, if you choose ball mount # C45030 with it you can use 2-inch ball # 63845.

You will need to get a hitch that can support the total weight of your camper. I would check to see how much your camper weighs and then get a hitch and ball mount that the weight capacity surpasses amount that the camper weighs. The etrailer hitch receiver # e98854 has a max tongue weight of 400 lbs. and a max trailer weight of 4000 lbs. This should be more than adequate for your pop up camper. As far a ball mount goes, you will need to get the right size ball for your trailer coupler.
