Video Transcript for etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at the etrailer ball mount kit for two inch hitches. Part number is 989900. Now the etrailer ball mount kit's going to be the perfect solution for hauling multiple trailers with multiple vehicles. It gives us a variety of rise and drop configurations, so we can get our trailer as level as possible while we head down the road. The kit's going to have both the ball mounts, the inch and seven-eighths ball, the two inch ball, and two pins and clips, so we can get these secured to separate vehicles if we like. The bag to contain it, it's a nice bag, it's lined here, that's going to help keep the rust and the grease that you get on the ball, from getting on the carpet in your vehicle, or in the bed of your truck.

See, these store in here pretty easily. It can be a good way to keep everything contained. Now, the ball mount kit's been designed to work with class three, four, or class five hitches, that have the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening or some of the class five hitches, you'll have to use that adapter to bring it down to a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. Now, the ball mounts are measured from the top of the receiver tube opening here. This is the two inch drop version, or three quarter inch rise, as you can see from that receiver tube opening edge to our ball platform, we have about three-quarters of an inch raise. If we we're to flip that over, it's going to give us two inches of drop.

Now, this ball mount from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball is about eight and a half inches. That's really only going to matter to you if your hitch is set in, underneath the vehicle, and you want to ensure that you're going to be able to get your trailer connected. The ball mount itself it's going to have a weight rating of 7,500 pounds as far as gross trailer weight goes. That's the total weight of your trailer and anything that you load up on it. It's going to have a maximum tongue weight rating of 750 pounds.

That's the maximum downward force we can put on the ball mount. Here's the other included ball mount. This is going to give us four inches of drop and then if we we're to rotate it over, it gives us two and three-quarters of rise, so that really helps us cover the gamut. This of course is going to be better suited for trailers lower to the ground. The other one better suited for trailers higher. Now, as we said, all other components are rated for 750 pounds of tongue weight, 7,500 pounds of gross trailer weight.

Then from the center of the pinhole to the center of our ball in this configuration, we've got nine inches. Now both ball mounts are going to have the hollow shank, that's going to help us out with weight, they're not quite as heavy as a solid shank would, but this is also going to work out really well if you want to add an anti-rattle device that maybe has a nut that goes inside. Shouldn't be an issue at all getting that secured. Now, both of our ball mounts are also going to have the black powder coat finish. This is going to help to resist rust and corrosion. Of course this finish like any other ball mount on the market, after years of service, they typically develop a little bit of rust or something like that, which is where that bag comes in really handy. Now, each ball is provided with the nut, and the lock washer. You're going to need to secure it to the ball mount. The shank length is going to be two and one-eighth of an inch long on both of them. It's one inch in diameter, so if you already have some ball mounts at home, and you're thinking you might want to add them to it, just want to make sure that size is going to work for you. That'll complete our look at the etrailer ball mount kit, part number 989900.

Thanks for checking in. The trailer hitch was great and held up fantastic. Only got to use it about 4 times, but it worked perfectly. The wiring harness matched perfectly and was a breeze to install. The SUV i mounted it on didnt have enough towing capacity for my new boat, so I ended up trading it in for a newer one that had a factory hitchpre-wired setup. So the hitch receiver and wiring stayed with the SUV upon trade in. I held on to the ball mounts and the other bars and have used them a bunch for towing and launching and they are working great. Really love the site and am shopping around for some other accessories like a roof rack and maybe some offroad recovery gear as well.

This is one of the items that has saved me a LOT of time. Since I use both my truck and my car (both have Curt hitches ordered from etrailer) for towing my half dozen or so different types of trailers, I am constantly needing to adjust the ball size and/or height depending on the combination of vehicle and trailer. With this kit is takes literally less that 30 seconds every time for me to configure to exactly my needs. Also, the bag is excellent for keeping crud and ball grease off my vehicle interiors and is big enough to hold a ball wrench inside as well. Cannot beat the price either for so much convenience and saved time. 448088

The good: It works. The not so good: 1. The lock washer on the ball stud makes it really hard to remove the nut. The lock washer cuts into the nut, essentially preventing it from unscrewing. This is good from a safety standpoint, but makes changing the configuration really hard. I had to lock it into a bench vice and use a pipe wrench to get it off. 2. Not sure what happened, but first time I used it (to pull a rental trailer), the hitch pin fell out, causing the trailer to disconnect. Best I can figure is that the cotter pin popped off. Fortunately, I wasn't on the highway, and the safety chains kept the trailer attached. But it was pretty scary. I replaced it with a locking pin, and had no further issues. 554118

Shipping - The hitch, ball mount-kit, wiring harness, and brush all arrived quickly in a single, heavy-duty cardboard box. The packaging was excellent! There had to have been a hundred heavy-duty staples used to secure everything. Installation - The video and paper instructions were spot-on and made the install much more straight forward. For two non-mechanics, it took us about 2 hours from the time we pulled the car into the garage until all the tools were put away to install the hitch, wiring harness, and mount the balls on the sleeves. We did not lift the car might have made it a little easier but totally doable. The only actual difficulty we had was pulling the rubber muffler mounts off. A little lubrication helps. Reinstalling them is easier. 450720

I ordered the following from etrailer.com. T-connector Vehicle Wiring Harness Draw-tite Class III Max-frame Hitch - 2 Etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit - 2 Drops/rises [kit] All parts arrived quickly and securely packaged. Order was perfect. Installed on a 2017 Hyundai Sante Fe. The installation video was a huge help. Installation was flawless and exactly as the video detailed. The hitch fit and wiring harness fit perfectly. Definite five stars on delivery, product quality and installation video. If I ever need towing parts again I'll definitely be shopping at etrailer.com. Well done boys, well done. 355411

I installed the draw tite hitch onto my brand new 2018 Subaru outback. I'm 68 years old, not as strong as I was, but proud to say I did the job all by myself in about 4 hours. Here are some tips you may find useful. Watch the video-it’s pretty good. I had difficulty getting the exhaust system down and worried about getting it up again from the moment I got it down...read on-help will follow. I bought a stepup drill bit which worked great for drilling the hole in the chasis. I clamped the hitch onto a floor jack, then rolled it and raised it into position. Used metal shears to easily cut out the heat shield as per the video. Your inclination will be the screw the fishing tool provided all the way up the carriage bolt. That won’t work; just screw it on to the tip of the bolt. I couln’t get the exhaust hangars in place even after lubricating them with wd-40. I dropped the rubber hangars into undiluted liquid car wash soap which made them much more slippery than the wd-40. After that the rubber hangars slipped into place pretty easily-that’s my best tip. Finding the electric connection plug for the wiring harness was almost as hard as installing the hitch. I was very happy with how the job came out. Good luck. 428039

I keep the set in the enclosed bag in my truck. Most hauling is done with a weight distribution hitch I have. Good to know it is there if needed.

Could not have been easier. I was able to find what I needed by looking at just the items for my vehicle. Item arrived days ahead of schedule. Items were well packed. Tongues appears to be well constructed, but they were made in China. Sturdy pins and a handy bag with enough room for your wrench besides. Very happy with my purchase and good to do business with a local company, too. 560030

Thanks for the contact Patrick. Everything is working beautifully. Ive received many comments from friends about how the hitch system looks factory installed on my 06 Jeep Rubicon. The draw-tite system is the only way to go in my book. It handles my 5 x 8 trailer famously. Have a great day, Bill Richards

First let me thank the folks at Etrailer.com for great service and communication!! The Ball mount kit was just what I hoped for, heavy duty and well made. The only reason I would give this 4 out of 5 is the fact that these were not wrapped in the box, and came with several chunks of paint missing from them. The packing job could have been better, bubble wrap or something would have kept this from happening. I ship things for a living, so I cringe when I see metal on metal shipped loose in a box. Also the pins provided are not the kind with holes in them, but rather grooves for the clip to slide over. This is a matter of preference, but I like having a hole in the pin for the clip to go through. The included bag is a nice bonus for safe keeping while not towing. 52436

Thank you for the informative video instructions as well as helpful / honest reviews to research prior to making the purchase. I do not have anything to add that has not been covered in the reviews. Here is a recap of my experience that has been consistent with others. 1. Box was received with the driver side of the hitch pushed out. Only minor scratches which you can not see when installed and it did not impact the installation. Wrapping each end would probably be a good idea as stated in other reviews. 2. Removing 14 years of rust was the hardest part of the install (from the passenger side holes). Total time was approximately 1 hour as others have experienced. I used the bolts from the factory tie hook to work out the rust using 1/2" round wire brush attached to a cordless drill along with a full can of WD-40. 3. Installation of the hitch took about 30 minutes with assistance of a foot stool. 4. Plug-n-play electrical connector took about 10 minutes after watching the video. 5. Perfect fitment, fast delivery, easy website ordering experience and follow-up status notifications, and I can not be more pleased with the cost being under $200 for a DIY project. I required this setup to tow a ~1,000 lb motorcycle trailer with a ~1,000 lb motorcycle next week and my Honda has a 3,500 lb towing capacity. Thank you etrailer.com! 427068

Good value and having the 2 options saved us because the higher rise ball mount did not work with the accessory bike rack and I was able to go with the lower rise instead. 562961

Excellent quality. Threads on the balls/nuts are smooth. No hang-ups. It's nice to have two sizes of ball mounts. Not just for the differing heights but you never know when someone will need a hand with their trailer than would take a different ball size. I just keep them both on-board in their bag in one of my storage compartments. nice strong bag. Pulling the pin and switching the ball mount is so much easier than getting out the wrench and tugging on an old rusted nut to change a ball. Not getting any younger ya know : ). 123882

  • Comparing Curt and Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitches for a 2017 Kia Sportage
  • If you will be using the trailer hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier than I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 76074 because it does not have the stabilization strap requirement for non-trailer loads like the Curt, # C13281. It also costs less. In fact, even if you were towing I would still recommend the Draw-Tite hitch because it is at a better price point. While the designs of these 2 hitches are a little different how and where they install is about the...

  • Why Does Bumper Beam Get Removed to Install Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on a 2017 Jaguar F-Pace
  • On your 2017 Jaguar F-Pace the bumper beam is removed for installation of the Draw-Tite hitch # 76026 because the cross tube spans the space between where it mounts to the vehicle. The bumper beam is curved but doesn't stick out far enough on the ends for the design of the hitch. The bumper beam is therefore removed and the hitch basically takes its place. On the Curt hitch # C13291 the cross tube is not as long so the curved bumper beam can fit around it and you won't have to leave...

  • Is Reprogramming Necessary to Install Wiring Harness on 2016 Volvo XC90?
  • Though I cannot speak for the parts that Volvo uses, there is not going to be any reprogramming necessary to install T-One Wiring Harness # 118683 on your 2016 Volvo XC90. In fact, you can take a look at the complete installation of this harness in the video I linked of it being installed on a '16 XC90 and you can see that the 4-way connector works without reprogramming. And though no round tube hitches are available for your Volvo XC90 I do recommend the Draw-Tite # 76194; you can see...

  • Trimming Fascia on a 2013 Toyota RAV4 to Install a Trailer Hitch
  • Draw-Tite recommends using a utility knife or die grinder to trim the fascia. A rotary tool works as well. I included a picture showing the area to be trimmed. I have also included a link to the installation instructions which additional information. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Wiring for a 2014 Toyota Highlander with Spare Tire
  • The Curt # C13200 is a confirmed fit for your 2014 Toyota Highlander, however, in our installation notes we have that you will NOT be able to store a full sized spare underneath after the hitch is installed. Instead of the Curt option I recommend going with the Draw-Tite # 75896 which has the same weight capacities as its Curt competitor and you can fit a full sized spare underneath after the hitch is installed. If your Highlander has the factory tow package (converter under dash) then...

  • The DrawTite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch, # 76028, for the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox does include the fish wires to install the bolts on the frame of your vehicle. For your wiring harness, there are two options. If you do not have the factory tow package, then you will need the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118494. The wiring harness is designed to plug into the existing wiring of the vehicle without cutting or splicing the original vehicle wiring. If you do have the factory tow package...

  • Comparing Draw-Tite Trailer Hitches for the 2018 Honda Odyssey
  • The single biggest difference between Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 76170 and # 76171 for the 2018 Honda Odyssey is visibility. With Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" Item # 76170, which is the one I recommend, only the receiver will be visible. If you want the most hidden trailer hitch for your van this is the best option. Compare that to Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" Item # 76171 which has the crosstube...

  • Does Heat Shield Get Removed to Install Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on a 2017 Ford Edge
  • The instructions for Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75234 for the 2017 Ford Edge state "for Edge Sport and MKX AWD model, remove (6) bolts and (1) flange nut attached on center plastic panel with heat shields, see Figure 3, and then remove the panel. Return to owner." See instructions linked for reference. This means that on the affected models the heat shield would not be reinstalled. The hitch itself can act as a heat sink though so nothing is really lost with the removal. I have linked...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2015 Lexus NX200t F Sport Model

Though none of these hitches are going to be hidden, I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75956. • Benefit of Class III Trailer Hitch on 2018 Subaru Crosstrek
  • The benefit of having a Class III hitch on your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek such as the Curt # C13382 or Draw-Tite # 76209 is that these hitches have a 2" receiver, which will give you more - and better - options in terms of usable accessories such as a bike rack or cargo carrier than if you had a hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver like the Class II Draw-Tite # 36644. Just as a reminder, a hitch with a larger towing capacity will not increase the amount your '18 Crosstrek can tow, it will still...

This Class III, 2" trailer hitch is a complete bolt-on installation so it will not require any drilling into the frame of your '19 Santa Fe.
