How To Measure Clearance Distance For A Cargo Carrier Behind Vehicle
Updated 07/11/2016 | Published 07/09/2016 >
Question:
Good morning, we purchased a trailer hitch from you and are now deciding on a cargo carrier. We would like to get one like your model #e98874 but do not like how far it sits away from vehicle. Is this model adjustable or can I drill new holes in it so it is closer to the vehicle. Or do you have another model thats similar that I havent seen that folds and is tighter to the back of vehicle? Thank you

I can help you make sure you have the clearance needed for a cargo carrier at the back of your vehicle.
You will need a tape measure and a straight edge like a yardstick or a dowel. Place the straight edge vertically against the back of the bumper or spare tire, letting it extend below the trailer hitch receiver opening. Then measure from the center of the hitch pin to the straight edge. This will give you the distance you need to clear the bumper or spare tire. Check out the attached helpful article.
The cargo carrier you asked about, part # e98874 measures 9-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the carrier. This carrier fits 2 inch receiver openings and it has a 2-inch rise in the shank for added ground clearance.
If you find the 9-inches is not enough clearance for your vehicle let me know what distance you came up with and I will be glad to help find something that will work. I have also attached a link to our product page for hitch mounted cargo carriers you can take a look at.
Most carriers sit a distance away from the vehicle because clearance is usually the concern. If you want a carrier that sits closer, the only one that I can find significantly closer is a drastically different carrier with extra high rails, almost like a cage. Check out the 23x47 Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches - Steel - 450 lbs, Item # M2200. This carrier sits only 4 inches from the hich pin hole. Check out the video.
