If you're looking for an American-made hitch that rides quietly, offers a quick and easy setup, and provides you with supreme handling, the Blue Ox SwayPro might be just what you're after. When we tested this system, the truck and trailer felt like one unit, and noise wasn't an issue at all. Overall, the SwayPro came out on top and proved to be one of our favorite weight distribution systems.

Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Blue Ox SwayPro Offers Superior Sway Control

Blue Ox SwayPro Positive Caster

The SwayPro is designed to keep your trailer centered behind your vehicle as you tow, no matter what crosswinds or obstacles try to get in your way. To do this, the head on the system is built with a positive caster angle. You might've heard of caster in reference to your car; it's the same technology that vehicles use to stay centered on the road. When you turn a corner in your car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically returns to center. This is caster taking over. Well, the SwayPro functions much the same way. The positive caster angle that's built into this hitch works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The trunnions inside the head assembly hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly hold your trailer in line.

A close-up shot of the Blue Ox SwayPro's bracket shows the chain rotated and pulled taught with very few chain links exposed

At the other end of this weight distribution system, you'll find 2 more points of built-in sway control. Blue Ox's rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible, with the majority of the chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. This means that each chain is held more stable than they are in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed.

This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from swaying - all without the creaking, grinding, and popping noises you get with friction-style sway control setups. Moreover, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage anything.

The Blue Ox SwayPro's No-Hassle Setup

When it's time to install the system for the first time, you might be surprised at how easy it is to do. All in all, you can probably have it done within an hour - 2 at the most.

First, the head. With just the right amount of adjustment angle already preset, it's ready to go right out of the box! No need to fine-tune it with hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew! The only thing you'll need to adjust is the height of the head on the shank. After that, to get the trunnion bars installed, just insert them into the sockets, and lock them in place with the included pins and clips.

Quick Tip: If you upgrade to a new trailer in the future, and you end up needing a system for a different tongue weight, you can just swap out the SwayPro's spring bars without having to buy a whole new hitch.

To get the Blue Ox SwayPro ready to go, just insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Other weight distribution systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. To get the SwayPro ready to go, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

The individual I worked with over the phone was extremely helpful. The shipping was rapid. Have not put it together so obviously not used as yet. From the appreciated service received I have every reason it will accomplish my goals.

by:

Very nice product. Extremely heavy duty and powder coat finish is great! Thank you e-trailer for the videos and for getting the product out the door quickly.

by:

Had a Pro Pride but hitching up at an up/down angle frustrated me so when I bought my new Airstream, I went with the Blue Ox. No problems now and took it on a two month trip to Canada with no issues.

by:

This hitch is amazing, I just hooked it up to my camper for a trial run and It worked much better than I expected.. wished I would have known about blue ox hitches sooner...

by:

1 year later, nothing but good things to say about the Blue Ox hitch. etrailer got me set up with the right equipment from the start.

by:

Way too heavy for me to install. My son installed it. Once he figured out how to avoid being hurt when releasing chain, he was much happier with it. Drove all day in high winds and trailer swayed a little but it would have been MUCH worse without this WDH! I would not have driven that day without this product.

by:

Haven't opened the product yet, but etrailer's service was phenomenal. It took less than 5 minutes to order the product, and within an hour of the purchase I got an email saying the hitch had shipped. I was expecting a delay with the current events taking place, but I was shocked to have the hitch on my porch the very next day.

by:

Everything went great with the installation. Looked at etrailer's video on line and that really helped. etrailer kept me informed on the shipping. Very happy with everything.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a Nucamp Tab 400
Thanks for the picture Chris! The lift-brackets mount about 29" back from the center of the coupler on the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control item # BXW0553. It looks like your trailer's tongue isn't going to have anywhere near that much space before it gets to the storage box. Instead of the clamp on hangers you could either use the Chain Hangers for Reese Weight Distribution Systems item # RP58305 or the Blue Ox Signature Series Lift Brackets item # BXW4021. I have...

  • Best Weight Distribution for a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and Rpod Travel Trailer
Weight distribution cannot be used with a Class II trailer hitch. To determine the actual Class hitch you have it may say it on the hitch somewhere or in the owners manual for your 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. A Class II hitch would have a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening size. A Class III hitch would have a 2 inch receiver opening. I have included a link to the right that covers the differences in hitch classes for you. If you do have a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver, check the hitch...

  • Determining Which Blue Ox SwayPro Hitch For Towing Airsteam Bambi W/ 2019 Honda Ridgeline
I would be happy to help you find the correct Blue Ox SwayPro weight distribution hitch for towing your Airstream Bambi with your 2019 Honda Ridgeline, but you will need to confirm your total tongue weight. Total tongue weight is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to tow trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Ridgeline. The easiest way to get an accurate tongue weight measurement is using a tongue weight scale like the # e99044 but there are other...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2016 Airstream Sport 16' Travel Trailer
Thanks for reaching out! According to my research a 16' Airstream Sport is going to have a tongue weight at around 350 lbs so a system like the Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW1006 that has a tongue weight range of 750 lbs - 1,000 lbs so it will be way overkill for your setup and you'll have a stiff towing experience. For a lighter trailer I recommend checking out the Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW0550 instead because the tongue weight range is 350 lbs - 550 lbs. A weight distribution system takes into account...

  • Does Weight Distribution Stop all Trailer Sway
Weight distribution can help reduce sway when towing but it does not always stop all of it. The best solution would be to move any weight in your trailer forward to increase the tongue weight and also make sure the trailer is sitting as level as possible. Or you could go with the Curt True Course sway control part # C94VV which has a sensor that can detect when your trailer is swaying and applies enough brake to stop it.

You more than likely have an overslung trailer coupler on the 2020 Rockwood GeoPro 19FBS. An underslung trailer coupler is one that attaches to the bottom of the trailer frame and an overslung one is one that attaches to the top of the frame. Since you have...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for 2900-lbs GVWR Trailer Pulled by 2011 Toyota Sienna
There are a couple of moving parts here and a lot of this will depend on whether or not you've got a 2" hitch on your 2011 Toyota Sienna. If you do have a 2" hitch, then you'll want to choose your weight distribution hitch based off of the tongue weight of your trailer; that number will typically fall between 10% and 15% of the GVWR of the trailer, so you're going to be in the 300-450lbs range in most cases. For that I recommend using the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control...

  • Using Weight Distribution System on Trailer with Underslung Coupler
While we do not currently carry Tuff Tow weight distribution systems, from what I could find they do not appear that they are designed for use on trailers with an underslung coupler like what you have. Using longer chains may help to reach the extra distance required to attach to the brackets while also keeping the ball level, but this may in turn create a ground clearance problem. Typically an underslung coupler requires a specific weight distribution head designed for it or a system that...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution for Lance 1685 Travel Trailer
Between the three systems you mentioned, I'd recommend the Equal-I-zer because of it's all-around effectiveness providing weight distribution as well as sway control. The system is very easy to set up and use, mechanically speaking it's very simple with few moving parts. The force exerted by the spring bars will prevent any bounce, and the Equal-I-zer systems are relatively quiet, but all weight distribution systems will have some sort of metal on metal friction and will make noise of...

They do look similar but the # BXW0550 is designed for standard trailer couplers and the # BXW0553 is designed for underslung couplers. In order to make sure this will work for your trailer you'll want to make sure your tongue weight falls between 350-lbs and 550-lbs, has trailer frame height between 3" and 6" and up to 2-5/8" wide. It sounds like your frame is 4" x 4", so you wouldn't want to use the included clamp on chain hangers. Instead of the clamp on hangers you could either use...
