Recommendation for Best Most Durable Construction Trailer Wheel

Updated 05/17/2016 | Published 05/13/2016

Question:

I am in search of trailer wheels that are durable but, somewhat attractive, too! I have a utility trailer that has sat out most of its life and I am in the process of renewing it. Would like to know where the Taskmaster PVD wheel stands up to a galvanized or painted wheel as far as weather and animal urine?

If you want the most durable trailer wheel that won't corrode, I would recommend going with an aluminum wheel. These can be attractive as well as durable. A 13 inch 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern aluminum wheel, that I think is attractive is the # AM22323HWTB. I have linked other aluminum wheels in this size to this page for your convenience.

The next most durable and attractive wheel, would be the PVD finish steel modular wheel. The PVD finish (PVD stands for physical vapor deposition) provides a durable silver-color finish that is actually harder than chrome. This type of finish is not a coating like a powder-coat or paint finish. The silver layer is applied over a period of time, molecule by molecule, until it completely binds with the underlying steel. This same type of process is used in other industries as well, even for production of luxury items like fancy wristwatches.

Then come the galvanized and painted wheels, these are good but will have opposite issues. The galvanized wheel isn't very attractive but will be more durable than the painted wheel because the painted wheel is more susceptible to corrosion. The galvanized wheel will have a heavy spot because of the way they are dipped, so the painted wheel will be more attractive and balanced.

On a good, better, best scale the aluminum ranks best, PVD finish on steel wheel is better, and both the painted and galvanized are good.

I have linked the recommended 13 inch wheel to this page for your convenience.
