Carrying 2 Batteries and 2 Propane Tanks on a Trailer Tongue

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 05/10/2016

Question:

Hello, will this product fit 20lbs propane x2 and 12v batteries x2? And will it interfere with a weight distribution system that is the hinges? Thanks!

Propane tanks can't be store inside of an enclosed container like a toolbox. If they build enough pressure it has to vent out to open air. That is why the plastic propane tank covers you see on trailers are open at the bottom.

I recommend a traditional dual tank cover, # CAM40532, for the propane tanks so you are nice and safe there. The batteries can go into a box. I recommend box # TLA7708R which is designed for batteries. It is 26-3/4 inches long, 8-3/16 inches wide, and 13 inches tall so 2 batteries that combine for less than those dimensions would fit. You could also add a solar panel to the top, # TLA7713, to charge the batteries.

There is a chance that the weight distribution brackets will require the same space as either the tank cover or the battery box. But depending on the system that you have you may be able to replace the brackets that clamp around the top of the frame with ones that bolt to the sides, # RP58305, which would solve that problem. I have linked a couple of videos for you to check out as well.

Why can't this box be vented?

@Jon The DeeZee Specialty Series Trailer Tongue item # DZ91717 is a tool box so it's not designed for things that need venting. It's meant to keep tools and other gear secured and protected from the elements.
