Question:
I have a trailer with alko 3500 lb axels. I need new backing plate assemblies which are 10X1-3/4. Can not seem to find them. Can I convert them to 10x 2-1/4inch if I buy new hubs.

You can use larger brakes and hubs by matching up the brake mounting pattern to your flanges and by selecting new hubs that use the same bearing set as your current hubs. Matching the bearings will ensure the new hubs fit properly on your spindles. The linked photo shows the usual location of bearing numbers.
If you wanted to use 4-bolt AxleTek # AKEBRK-35L and # AKEBRK-35R electric drum brakes and if your hubs use inner/outer bearings # L68149 and # L44649 you could use hub/drum # AKHD-545-35-K. You'll need 4-bolt brake flanges like # DM52415 or # DM60124, depending on your axle size. These must be installed by a qualified welder who has the required jigs to get them perfectly aligned.
You could also replace the entire axle with a complete 3500-lb beam axle kit that includes brakes, such as kit # e43SR. This is an 89-inch axle with bearings, races, seals and electric drum brakes and 10 x 2-1/4-inch hubs. These hubs use a 5-on-4-1/2 bolt pattern.
All of the electric and hydraulic drum brakes we offer for 3500-lb axles are the 10 x 2-1/4-inch size like AxleTek # AKEBRK-35L and Titan # T4071500. We carry no drum brakes in the 10 x 1-3/4-inch size but much older trailers might have had 10 x 1-1/2-inch drum brakes installed. We do not carry that size either.
