Carrying a 24 Inch Wide Push Mower on a Cargo Carrier with a Honda Fit and Class I Trailer Hitch
Question:
Hello, Im looking for a solution to transport a push lawn mower with my Honda Fit. The 24inch depth would allow me to do this. Would I be able to attach this unit using a 1 1/4inch to 2inch adapter since I have a class I hitch with a 2000lb towing capacity? I know tongue weight comes into play. The lawn mower weighs 90lbs. Thanks!

Expert Reply:
When using a 1-1/4 to 2 inch adapter it will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent and put additional stress on the receiver. The Class I hitch on your Honda Fit would have a reduced tongue weight capacity of 100 pounds. The combined weight of the mower and the carrier itself will exceed this capacity.
What I recommend is to use Curt carrier # C18110 and fasten a flat deck to the top that is 24 or more inches wide so the mower will fit. This carrier is designed to work with a Class I trailer hitch so you would not have to use an adapter and there won't be a reduction in capacity.
