Installing Curt Class lll Hitch On 1997 Jeep Cherokee

Question:

Howdy, I just purchased a Curt 2inch hitch for my 1997 Cherokee. This is my 3rd hitch from etrailer and the products and help are great! I have a question about this kit, The passenger side receiver nuts in the frame seem to small for the bolts provided. I used pBlaster and a wire brush, but the bolts will still not go in. Is it possible that the bolts in the kit are a bit too big? I have no problem buying local bolts or if need be, can I drill out the holes and use the same method as the drivers side? Thanks

Per the instructions for the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 13084, you should use the existing bolts and reinstall them with the included washers. That method is for vehicles equipped with frame mounted, closed sided, steel skid shield. This is noted as Type A in the instructions.

For Type B which is 1997 and newer vehicles with the frame mounted, closed sided, steel skid shield. You would reuse the existing M12 bolts but you need to drill holes in the skid shield.

If your Cherokee is NOT equipped with frame mounted, closed sided, steel skid shield or frame mounted tow hook, you will need to use the included fishwire and use the square hole spacers, round hole spacers and the included 1/2 inch carriage bolts. This is noted as Type D in the installation instructions.

If you have existing weldnuts, then you would reuse the bolts you removed. If you did not have the bolts in those locations, you will need to purchase new grade 5 M12 bolts.

You will want to make sure you torque all of the fasteners per the instructions.
