I would be happy to explain the flat towing procedure for your 2005 Jeep Wrangler. This information can also be found in the owners manual under the Recreational Towing section.
The key to flat towing your Jeep is to make sure the transfer case is shifted into N (Neutral). The steps are listed below.
1. Make sure you are level ground before you start.
2. Depress the brake pedal
3. Shift automatic transmission into N (Neutral) or depress the clutch pedal on manual transmission.
4. Shift transfer case lever into N (Neutral)
5. Start the engine.
6. Shift automatic transmission into D (Drive) or manual transmission into gear.
7. Release the brake pedal and make sure the vehicle does not move.
8. Shut the engine off and place the ignition key into the unlocked OFF position.
9. Shift automatic transmission into P (Park).
10. Apply parking brake.
11. Attach vehicle to the tow vehicle with tow bar.
12. Release parking brake.
To shift out of N (Neutral)
1. Shift automatic transmission into N (Neutral) or depress clutch pedal on manual transmission.
2. Shift transfer case lever into desired position.
3. Shift automatic transmission into D (Drive) or release clutch on manual transmission.
Note: When shifting out of transfer case N (Neutral) on automatic transmission equipped vehicles, turning the engine off may be required to avoid gear clash.
