Hi, everyone, Steve here with etrailer.com. Today we're looking at the bike lock set for the four-bike platform rack. Now this is gonna be ideal for Benton's two bike Shifts&Grins platform rack with the included extension. So it's a two plus two bike rack, as we call it. You're gonna have the smaller lock here, that's gonna be for that extension on that Shifts&Grins platform rack. And then you get your standard what fits a two inch hitch or a 5/8 inch pinhole.
And you simply would twist a key to unlock that. It's all threaded here. Inside the lock mechanism here is a threaded Tumblr, and that key actually screws that in place here. After you've done the tightening with your wrench and everything, to get all that play out of the rack, you would then put this on, twist the key onto the lock Tumblr part here, get everything nice and tight and locked, put your dust cover on, close it up. Now you're ready to hit the trails.
Same thing with the expansion lock here. With the cable lock here, it's a 10-foot cable, so an impressive length, same thing, untwist the lock key here to get it off of the mechanism. Now you've got your cable, push it through all the racks and everything in a secure spot, somewhere no one can get to it easily, and then thread it back through itself on the cable eye. And then, same thing, put the lock on, twist it using the key. I like to tell people, think of the key as like your tool here.
You would twist it, get it tight, takes two to three turns max, and then put the dust cap on. And just like that, you're secure. All your bikes are locked onto the rack, your rack's locked onto the vehicle. No one could take anything. All these sets of keys, there's three sets of two keys, so you're gonna get six individual keys total.
They are keyed alike, so they're interchangeable between these specific locks here. Well, folks, that's gonna wrap it up for our look together at this bike lock set for the four-bike platform rack. I'm Steven, thanks for watching.
Although I have the 2 inch it seems to be a little lose still but seems like a good bike rack
Easy to work with when locking the hitch to the receiver
The only thing that makes this purchase worth the money is the locking pins for the bike rack and 2-bike add-on, and that just barely. The locking pin for the base rack does nothing to eliminate vertical bounce of this rack, so calling it an anti-rattle hitch lock is very nearly dishonest. It DOES lock, but it's a very awkward locking mechanism. The shaft of the lock is a threaded screw that you turn with the key! And.... wait for it.... you STILL have to fasten the pin with a lockwasher and a nut, meaning that you have to keep an adjustable wrench with you at all times if you need to remove the rack.
The pin that locks the 2-bike extension to the base rack has the same locking mechanism, and you need a STACK of washers if you don't want it sliding back & forth after you install it. There's a lot of play in this pin.
If Benton didn't use their proprietary square-shaped threaded pin to secure the base rack to the vehicle, this purchase would be completely unnecessary.
I gave it 3 stars because it DOES allow you to lock your rack and extension to your vehicle, but that's the best thing I can say for it. The locking mechanism is very poor, the fit of the extension rack pin is poor, and the base rack pin needing to be secured with a lockwasher and nut is pretty close to ridiculous.
