Video Transcript for Kuat Transfer Cable Locks and Hitch Lock Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install, the Cable Locks and Hitch Lock for the Kuat Transfer 2 Bike Rack, part number PTSCLK12. Now it's also available for the Kuat Transfer 3 Bike Rack, using part number PTSCLK13.So our Kuat Transfer 2 Bike Rack is a nice bike rack, but out of the box it doesn't provide us with a whole lot of security. A passerby could simply just release the strap back here, come up remove the wheel hook, and our bike could be going in a matter of seconds. Now the same thing could be said for the entire bike rack itself. They could simply just pull the pin and clip, and if they had a wrench, they could pull this bolt out and take the whole thing with them. When it comes time to lock your bike up, we can simply pull the cable out and then take this large silver piece, and we're going to slide it down so that we have the free end of the cable is out. Then I'm just going to wrap the cable around the frame of my bike, and if we look there's going to be a hole on that large silver part, and that's where the end of the cable is going to go right back into. That way the cable's going to be wrapped nicely around the frame, and nobody's going to be able to pull it off.And each bike is going to have their own locks, they're going to lock independently from each other rather than having a large cable going around all the bikes, which is going to be nice if you only have one bike on there at a time. The cables are made of a durable steel, with a nice coating on them.

So we're not going to have to worry about any scratches or abrasions on the frame of our bikes. Each one of the cable locks, and the hitch lock, are going to be keyed alike and it is going to come with 3 keys. So we're not going to have to look for each individual one when we go to take our bikes off. When our bikes aren't in place, we're not going to have to worry about our cable coming out accidentally, because there's going to be a magnet that's going to hold it inside the arm until we're ready to use it.If we extend our cable all the way out, from the edge of the end cap here, it's going to be just a little bit over 2 feet, but keep in mind that we're going to have to leave ourselves a little bit of room so that we can wrap around the frame and come back into the lock.So if you're looking to add some security to your transfer, and make sure that your bikes are secure to the rack, and the rack is secure to the car; our lock system is going to deter any kind of tampering and it's going to be a nice sleek look because they're going to be custom designed to go directly into the wheel hook arms.To install our cable locks onto our bike rack, it is going to be a very simple installation. First we're going to come to the very end of where our wheel hooks are. We're going to need to remove the end cap.

So we can take the included tool with our lock kit, and we're going to pull the bolt out. Then we pull the rest of the end cap out.Now we can take our cable lock, and you'll notice that it has a hex shape on one side. We're going to take the included nylon lock nut, and we're going to put it inside the little hex hole here, so it sits in there and it can't turn. We're going to make sure that the nylon is sticking out though. Then we can take our cable, and we're just going to feed it down into the arm, and push the black plastic down, and we can take the new included bolt. And you'll notice that it's going to be a torqued bit with little center post in there, that means it's going to be a security bit.

So unless you have a torque security tool, you're not going to be able to remove it, which fortunately they do provide you that with the kit, and we can just tighten it up.And once we have that tightened all the way up, we'll repeat that for all the remaining ones. And the nice thing about our hitch lock, is we're not going to have to remove the pin at all. We can simply just pull out the clip and attach our lock directly to that pin that was already in there. And that'll finish up your look at the Cable Locks and Hitch lock for the Kuat Transfer Bike Rack.

This product, which is both a hitch lock and a bike lock for the Kuat Trannsfer 2 is excellent. The hitch lock mates to the OEM Kuat hitch pin, and the bike locks are a very clever design which allow you to have them permamently a part of the rack, hidden under the tube frame when not needed. The folks at ETrailer did a very good job of keeping me informed of the order status. These Kuat products are in early production and hard to obtain. ETrailer kept me up to date. 228801

The Kuat Transfer 2 with integrated bike and hitch system is, by far, the best bike rack system I have ever purchased. It's easy to install and highly secure so we didn't worry about leaving our bikes on the rack overnight during a recent trip. The lock system is clever and easy to operate, also very cool design. Etrailer offered the lowest price and excellent customer service as I called with a few questions. highly recommend! 545397

Works exactly as expected. Another reviewer mentioned how they wished the hardware was tamper proof.. well it appears they have updated the hardware as mine came with tamperproof torx bolts. Work seamlessly with the rack. I’m very happy and impressed with the quality. 634271

Lock for hitch pin is like most all of them, very loose fitting and rattles on the receiver (annoying) prior to my creative use of some padding. The integrated bike locks are pretty useless. The locks stick out from the hook arm instead of being seated fully inside and being less obvious to a passerby. The cable is far too short to effectively lock the bike with. Couldn't fit around my frame(s) in any way. I got it around just the fork alright and with a lot of straining got it to fit around the front tire and fork for whatever security it's probably capable of. Fumbling with your key and the locking mechanism while holding the cable inside is just annoying. You will not avoid being a nice 6-8' cable to really secure bikes well. My 7' cable with 2 paddocks works well to secure both tires and frames of 2 bikes to the rack and the rack to the receiver. The locking hitch pin is some added security, but janky. The integrated bike locks are a waste of engineering thought and not worth any money. I was disappointed with shipping. Although I found this product on Etrailer.com after several other vendors indicated being out of stock with it. I ordered the lock kit only from etrailer at the same time that I ordered my rack from another vendor (offering a lower price than etrailer), both with standard shipping. The lock kit arrived a week after the rack. I was glad that I didn't order the rack from etrailer. On a good note, etrailer customer service appears to genuinely care in at least some way. I continually received emails regarding ordering and shipping status. Then received an invitation to take this survey, indicating that they want to learn how to improve with each customers input. So, maybe this is a good test for etrailer. The ball is in your court, watcha' gonna do? 239217

Excellent experience. Communication was great; I was informed when the order was accepted, shipped and when I received the parcel. The Kuat cable locks and hitch lock (PTSCLK12) for the Kuat Transfer 2 Bike Rack was in stock and shipped immediately at a reasonable price. The system arrived quickly and safely. It was installed with ease. Although installation was simple, there was a video on the etrailer.com website describing the steps. I appreciate the convenience of the “hidden” lock ends and cable during transport and singular key. One thing I found unusual was the supplied “security bolt” (Torx head cap screw) did not secure the lock end cap as tightly as the original socket head cap screw (I think due to the smaller head size), so I just used the original screw. 312915

This is the perfect accessory for your expensive Kuat rack because it keeps it locked to your hitch and locks your bikes to the rack. Its got a single key for everything so no need to fumble around for another key in the dark or when youre unloading a bunch of stuff. I had to give only four stars because I do have a small gripe with it. the cable length for the lock is too short to be super useful. I get it that the cable can only be as long as the wheel hanger by design but that only allows you to lock the head tube by itself rather than the wheel AND the headtube for added security. Im afraid one day ill come out from lunch an only have a frame left. Not really because I have an old cable lock to use but still would be nice if it was longer! Nevertheless, I love my rack and would still buy this. 305226

This product gives the impression that the bikes are locked down, but the part that holds the cable in the rack is only held in by two small screws, that screw into plastic. Pro: it does give you a piece of mind knowing that if the bike rack malfunctions and your bike gets loose, the cable will keep your bike secure on the rack until you can pull over and fix the bike rack. 391793

These work great in the Kuat Transfer 2 Platform rack which by the way is an excellent bike rack. Well worth the few dollars to add on the rack and have piece of mind. 801929

Functionally these locks are great. The only issue is that in the stored position the can vibrate out of the tube and dangle off the bike rack. Not really an issue as it doesn’t happen all the time. 726980

- PTSCLK12
by:

Excellent product and works very well. Reason for the 4 stars would be it the cables were at least a foot longer. Its hard to wrap it around the frame and make it back to lock. Whats awesome is there is 1 key for everything 718148

by:

These as just a deterrent for quick trips into a store or gas station. 715464

- PTSCLK12

This lock kit was easy to install and looks great. I don't think they will stop a determined thief, but are a good solution if leaving your bikes locked up for a short time in a public place. 713851

- PTSCLK12
by:

Rack is a little heavy for my Accord, but keeps both bikes secure, and is easy for placing and removing the bikes. 713785

- PTSCLK12
by:

Works well, lock is easy operating. Lock assembly and especially the cable gets really dirty from being installed on rack. looks like rust from something in the rack housing. Cable needs to be longer. 711513

- PTSCLK12
by:

Absolutely useless. The cables are not even half as long as needed to reach around the frame and back to itself. 710790

The first being that the center portion is open so you can walk right up inside of the rack and place your bikes in the cradles whereas for the RockyMounts MonoRail 2 Bike Platform Rack part # RKY10003 you will have to stop at some point and lift the bike up and over the center section.
