Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Kenda vs Taskmaster Wheel and Tire Comparison for 4.80-12 on 4 Bolt Wheel
The Kenda Wheel and Tire part # AM30620 and the Taskmaster part # TA89RR you referenced are very similar in a lot of ways. White wheel, 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern, Load Range of C, but the big difference is the speed rating. The Taskmaster is rated for speeds up to 81 MPH and the Kenda is only for up to 65 mph.

  • What Is The Speed Rating Of The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30620
Hey Giuseppe, The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30620 has a max speed rating of 65mph. If you're looking for something with a higher speed rating you could go with the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 12" Vesper White Spoke Wheel # TA49QR instead, which has an M (81mph) speed rating.

  • Proper Centering of New Trailer Wheel Whose Pilot Hole is Larger Than Original Wheels
You were given some correct information. The new trailer wheels you purchased that have a larger pilot hole will still be compatible with your hubs in terms of being properly centered. The key is indeed the coned lug bolts, such as # RG02-020. These will automatically center the wheel on the hub as they are tightened, as will coned lug nuts such as # CE11051. The larger pilot hole does not matter for alignment. However, since your wheel has a larger pilot hole diameter this means that...

  • Using Hub Centric Rings on Trailer Wheels
A spacer or hub-centric ring is sometimes used on passenger vehicles, but our resident wheel and tire guru tells me that they aren't needed for use on trailers, due to the weight load a trailer wheel will be under. If you feel you need them, you can do a Google search on 'Hub Centric Rings' and you'll find plenty of them. If you decide to use them, I'd avoid the plastic rings and use the aluminum ones.

  • Replacement Larger Tires for a 5x8 Utility Trailer
Hey Andy, thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you might have a 4.80-12 tire like the Kenda # AM30620, so to upgrade you can use a 5.30-12 tire, like the Taskmaster Radial Tire # TT53012C which is going to have about a 21-1/2" diameter and about a 5-1/2" section width. These install on the same wheel so you'll be able to have a tire shop swap them out for you. If these tire sizes don't match what you have, please let me know what the big lettering on the sidewall of your current tires...

  • Does 4 Lug 4.80-8 and 4.80-12 Wheel/Tire Combo Use Same Wheel Bolt Pattern
If your 4.80-8 wheel/tire is mounted on a wheel with a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern, then a 4.80-12 mounted on a wheel with a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern such as # AM30620 would indeed fit. The bolt pattern is the same, the only thing that changes is the size of the tire and the diameter of the wheel.

  • How to Determine Total Weight Carrying Capacity of Trailer Tires
When a trailer wheel/tire like the bias ply Kenda # AM30120 shows a weight carrying capacity of 910-lbs, which is for Load Range C, that is for just the one wheel/tire. So, yes, you would double that to determine the total weight capacity of the axle/hub/wheel/tire system. Do note that if one of the items in this system is rated lower than the others, then that lower rating becomes the overall capacity limit. For example, if a wheel has a rating of 1250-lbs but the tire mounted on that...

  • Recommendation for 4.80 x 12 Trailer Tire and Wheel Combo for Highway Speeds
We have numerous 4.8-12 tire/wheel combos available depending on the bolt pattern you need. For a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, I recommend Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch White Wheel, # AM30620. This is a load range C tire with a 6 ply rating and 990 pound capacity at 90 psi. It comes with a 12 inch white rim. This tire/wheel combo is rated for a maximum speed of 65 miles per hour. For a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, I recommend Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch White Wheel,...

  • Recommended Axle With 5 On 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Idler Hubs And Wheels
I contacted Harbor Freight's tech services line regarding your Haul Master Trailer. Your trailer may have an odd size axle, so the industry standard size parts would not be compatible. Their tech services can't give me the information to help you, so I would need you to pull your hub and give me the bearing number on it for me to tell you if we can change the hubs out for 5 lug or not.

  • Trailer Tire and Wheel Replacement for Trailer with Size 4.80-12
You'll want the size 4.80-12 since that is what is listed on your tire sidewall. The other size mentioned basically is another way of stating the same size. For a wheel an tire in this size I recommend the Taskmaster Wheel and Tire # TA98RR which is a radial tire in this size with a higher speed rating of 81 mph on a steel wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern (which you most likely have). It has a great weight capacity of 990 lbs at 90 psi as well.

  • Can 4.80-12 Size Trailer Tires Be Changed to 4.80-8 Size
The difference in overall diameter between 4.80-8 and 4.80-12 size trailer tires is about 4-1/2 inches. A smaller tire will clearly not create a clearance issue around fenders where a larger size could. The two tires' widths are fairly close to one another - 3-3/4-inches for the 4.80-8 and 4-inches for the 4.80-12. Here again a slightly narrower tire will not create fit problems. But you will want to be sure that the lower load capacity of the smaller 8-inch tire will still be enough for...

  • Axle, Hubs, Tire and Wheel Recommendation for Homemade 2,000 lb Trailer
While I totally understand the convenience of having a spare that can be used on either your trailer and your van, I cannot recommend using automotive tires on a trailer (or vice versa), and here's why. ST (Special Trailer) tires are made for a specific purpose—supporting the vertical load and cornering forces of trailers, which is why their sidewalls are stiffer. P (Passenger) tires are designed with more flexible sidewalls and are made with passenger comfort and steering in mind and...

  • Do Wheels with Lug Nuts Center on the Hub Via the Pilot Hole of the Wheel
Hey Joe, there's no reason you'd need anything in your wheel pilot hole as your wheels are centered via the tapered lug nuts. If for some reason your wheels were secured with wheel bolts instead of lug nuts then yes you'd need the pilot diameter to be exact but that wouldn't be the case for you.

  • What psi Should Trailer Tires be Inflated To
Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum air pressure indicated on the tire. The tire on tire and wheel combo # AM30620 for example should be at 90 psi. The reason that you inflate trailer tires to the max is because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. If the tires are under inflated, because of that thicker sidewall it will cause them to generate excessive heat. Heat is the number one enemy of tires. I have included a link to the...

  • Trailer Modifications and 8 inch to 12 or 13 inch Tire and Wheel Upgrade Recommendations
To upgrade to a larger tire you will have to upgrade to a larger wheel as well, and with that in mind you will want to make sure that the bolt pattern of your new wheel and tires match the existing bolt pattern on your current trailer. I have included a helpful article explaining how to determine the bolt pattern of your existing wheels. Depending on the existing bolt pattern on that your trailer is currently set up for I recommend the following: 4.80-12 - 4 on 4 bolt pattern # AM30620;...

  • Does a Trailer Wheel Center Hole and a Hub Bore have to Match
The expert answer you have referenced is correct. A wheel that secures to the hub using bolts instead of lug nuts actually centers on the hub so the pilot hole of the wheel has to be exact. If it is too large the wheel can easily be off center and lead to all sorts of problems. Hub # 8-91-05UC1 has a center bore outer diameter of approximately 2.4375 inches; very close to 2.5 inches but not quite. If you use this hub and the wheels you are using have a pilot hole that is larger, it will...

The part # AM30620 is a load range C tire with a 990 lb capacity at 90 psi. For maximum tire life and performance, trailer tires should be kept at the maximum pressure shown on the tire sidewall.

  • Will Upgrading from 8 Inch Wheel to 12 Inch Wheel Help Highway Performance
I have an option that may work for you, but you will not see a significant advantage in highway performance going from an 4.8-8 tire and wheel to a 4.8-12 inch tire and wheel. In fact, going to a taller tire will raise the center of gravity of the trailer making it more susceptible to sway. If you have enough wheel well clearance, I would look into a 12 inch radial tire and wheel like the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 S-Trail Tire, # AM10130. All of the 4.8-12 tires are bias ply tires, but the...

A hub-centric wheel centers upon the portion of the hub that protrudes through the pilot hole in the wheel, instead of on the lug nuts like a lug-centric wheel would. A wheel with a 4.77 inch pilot diameter would fit perfectly on your hub. The 2 hundredths of an inch is enough of a difference where the wheel will still be able to slide over he portion of the hub that protrudes through, but the difference is small enough where the wheel would still be supported. The first suggestion I have is for you to not exceed 65 miles per hour when towing your trailer. I wish there was something I could recommend that would allow you to tow faster than that, but unless stated otherwise trailer tires are limited to only going 65 miles per hour and need to be inflated to their maximum psi. For what you are trying to do I would just stick with the size you currently have on your trailer, going to a bigger size would not allow you to go any faster and you know...

  • Can a Trailer Wheel with Larger Center Pilot Hole Fit the Same Hub as Wheel with Smaller Pilot Hole
Yes, since the wheels you have now attach to the hub using lug nuts you can go with a wheel that has a larger pilot hole than the previous wheels. You just can't go to a smaller pilot hole. A wheel that attaches using lug nuts centers on the hub using those lug nuts. This is called a lug-centric wheel. If the wheel attached with bolts then the pilot hole would have to be exact since the wheel would center on the hub via the pilot hole. This is called a hub-centric wheel. So in short...

  • Can a Load Range C Tire be Used Instead of a Load Range B Tire on a Trailer
First, make sure that you stay within the gross trailer weight capacity for your trailer. If that 200 pounds extra puts you over the gross trailer weight capacity then you will want to carry that extra weight in the vehicle. Going with a higher capacity tire will not increase the gross trailer weight capacity. With that said since you have a long way to go and such small tires, having a stronger tire in the same size would help to reduce the chance of anything happening to the tires. For...
