Question:

Hello, I’m hoping to get some advice on replacement tires for my trailer. The trailer is 5’ x 8’ and it’s a caravan utility trailer. I’m hoping to put my new smoker on the trailer and the tires that are currently on it seem a little thin for the weight which is about 800 pounds. Which is not a lot of weight but I would like a tire that is wider that could handle a bigger load and be stable. I measured the current tire and here is what I found. Is there a tire that you recommend? And should buy both the tire and the rim or will the wider tire fit on the existing rim? Thanks. Space between the nuts going horizontal is about 3 inches center to center. Space between the nuts going diagonal is roughly 4 inches. Tire width is 4 inches roughly The tire height is 19 inches

Hey Andy, thanks for reaching out!

It sounds like you might have a 4.80-12 tire like the Kenda # AM30620, so to upgrade you can use a 5.30-12 tire, like the Taskmaster Radial Tire # TT53012C which is going to have about a 21-1/2" diameter and about a 5-1/2" section width. These install on the same wheel so you'll be able to have a tire shop swap them out for you.

If these tire sizes don't match what you have, please let me know what the big lettering on the sidewall of your current tires say so I can help you figure out the correct replacement for you.

Hi Jon. You did an awesome job finding this tire for my trailer. I’m now looking for a spare. Any ideas (tire and tube)? I believe it’s 5 lugs

@AndyM Thank you! If you'd like to use the same tire from Taskmaster # TT53012C then you'll need to either reuse your current spare wheel (if you have one) or get a separate one like the Taskmaster # TA49RR and have a tire shop mount it as we unfortunately don't have a way to do that in our warehouse. For something that already comes mounted we have the Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30820. Normally we say to use the exact same tires all around the trailer, but if you plan on just using this in a pinch then it will be okay to use a different brand and Bias vs Radial.
