Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2008 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today on this 2008 Dodge Ram pickup 1500 series quad cab, we're going to install part number 90885 from Tekonsha. This is a Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller. Now to help us with our install, we're also going to be using part number 3020-P from Tekonsha. This is a plug-in wiring adapter for electronic brake controllers with Dodge tow packages. We're underneath the dash on the driver's side of the truck, and we'll go ahead and look for a tow package port. Now on this truck, this is the blue connector right here. That's a tow package port.

Now from the factory, it's not going to be sitting there. In fact, in this particular vehicle, it was buried behind the wires right here, and taped to the wires going to the grommet. It was almost impossible to see, so you have to kind of go by feel to pull it out. Then we'll go ahead and use our adapter cord to go from the tow package to our brake controller. This will simply plug together until it snaps. Let's go ahead and look for our brake controller. First off, we've got a choice how to mount our brake controller.

If you want permanent attachment, you can use the metal bracket right here, or if you want to switch it between vehicles, it may be a good idea to use the pocket here. Now the customer was nice enough to let us know where our brake controller should sit, so this is our location, and we're going to use our pocket right here. We'll go ahead and use one of the sheet metal screws that comes with the kit, and we'll go ahead and attach it to the plastic. Now, we want to make sure that the pocket sits in a straight line with the truck. It's not anything like this. And that way our brake controller will be the same way. And then we'll go ahead and user our second screw to permanently attach it. Should go for tight.

Now we'll take our cord, and run it to the back of the pocket, then plug into the back of our brake controller. Then, put the brake controller in the pocket. We'll take a few moments to go ahead and zip tie our wire and make sure it's safe and secure and out of the way. Now the zip ties we're using doesn't come with any of the parts shown today, so it's always a good idea to get zip ties when you do any electrical on your vehicle. Let's go ahead and check out our brake controller. We have power going to it, so it shows two dots. One dot's for power, and one dot's going to be your boost setting.

We'll go ahead and touch the boost button and we'll cycle through. Let's go ahead and put it back to the factory setting. And then we'll go ahead and check out the manual override. See it says "NC" for "no connection" because there's no trailer hooked up to it. Let's go ahead and hook up a trailer and see how it works from there. With our trailer connected, it shows a "C" for a "connection". We'll go ahead and use the manual override and see how it scrolls through the numbers. This is what's set right now for our total output. Now we control the output of the power from this knob right here. All the way to zero, and it actually shows you zero, to all the way back up to eleven. In this case, it's always good to start off with setting it about in the middle, say around six. Now we'll go ahead and hit the brake pedal, and we'll get a small amount of numbers to show up, and that tells us we got signal from our brake pedal as well, so it looks like everything works. And that'll do it for our install, part number 90885 from Tekonsha, Prodigy P2 Brake Controller on our 2008 Dodge Ram quad cab 1500. .

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I bought a used 2003 Dodge 1500 pickup truck that has the towing package. It was missing the brake controller and this plug-in wiring adapter. I installed a brake controller that I bought from etrailer last spring for another vehicle I own and bought this wiring adapter. It was an easy install, it just plugged right in to the existing wiring harness. The plug-in adapter was just what I needed and I didn't have to cut or splice any wiring. It made the installation very easy and the price was very reasonable. 573093

2005 Dodge Ram Pickup

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and the Plug-in Wiring adaptor for my Dodge Ram Diesel 2005. It shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I plugged it into the under-dash socket in about 30 seconds and tried it out before installing it; it powered up immediately and everything looked good. It took a few minutes to install the P3 bracket to the dashboard just to right of the steering column and about the level of my knee. The adaptor has enough length to put it left or right of the steering column, but not very high on the dash. The adaptor made the installation quite simple – gathering the tools and deciding controller placement took 20 minutes out of the total 30 minute installation time. The actual installation was to drill 2 holes and screw in 2 screws to the dash and 2 screws to the pocket bracket, then tying the cord to other wiring behind the dash. Settings for electric brakes and other info into the unit took under 2 minutes. Wow! What a difference - the braking was strong, smooth and uniform. I can only compare on my vehicle to braking without a controller unit engaging the trailer brakes, but it showed me how important those brakes are to an easy and safe stop. I have driven other people’s trucks with loaded horse trailers, and their controller units did not give anything like the constant readout of trailer brake voltage and other information this one gives you. This is obviously a high quality unit with everything I need and more. My priority is horse safety on the road and that includes smooth, proportional braking. I like the ability to monitor the voltage of the vehicle system, the volts and amps to the trailer, and troubleshooting capabilities. I spent 6 or 8 hours reading everything on brake controllers before ordering this one, and compared it to several other highly-rated units. While it is available for similar pricing from eBay and other sites, I found etrailer.com's website to make things very easy, such as finding the exact Plug-in Adaptor for my vehicle, finding videos about various controllers, and finding instructions for installing the unit. Thanks to the etrailer.com website, I was able to check under my dash to verify the brake controller plug was there waiting to be used, and I had a very realistic idea of the installation procedure in advance. Getting the Plug Adaptor in the same shipment was important too, and let me install it immediately. I was glad I ordered from etrailer.com and would not hesitate to order from them again. 164082

This review was so helpful after all my own research that it helped me feel cofident in my decision to try this connector on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the factory tow package. Like she said. It takes longer to decide where to put it than it did to take it out of the box, plug it in and tie the cable neatly in place. One thing that she didnt say is that the sheathing around the 4 wires keeps the bundle as neat and clean as Ive ever seen in a wiring harness.

Still working great. I have not even used all the diagnostic features lately. Trips as far as Orlando to Dallas to Houston and back. No issues, and I have put it on and off about 10 times, ie unplugged it when trailer not hitched. Easy to adjust the boost on the brakes.

This part made it easy to install, and I have unplugged the controller each time I unhitch the trailer, then put it back in, clipping the plug-in adapter to the back and snapping the unit into its bracket, probably 10 times this year. Clicks in great each time, unit works perfectly and I use different boost when horse is not in the trailer, due to change in weight.

2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

I havent had a need for a trailer brake controller for many years. I read many reviews and finally decided on the Tekonsha Prodigy 3. It was modern and looked relatively simple to set set up and use. I picked up the phone on Monday called etrailer and the told salesman what i needed . I received my controller and harness specific for my 2006 2500 dodge on Thursday. I installed it in my truck on Friday. It took bout 30 minutes. I bought a 29' travel trailer on Saturday. Brake controller was easy to set up following the instructions that came with it. 30 minutes may sound a little long but that was because i mounted in wrong location 1st time (kept hitting my knee on it getting in and out of truck) Stinks being short!! I cant compare it to any other controllers but i can say etrailer and Tekonsha met my expectations. Thanks 345949

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch. When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play. 261544

2005 Honda Pilot

I have a 2005 Dodge pu w trailer package but usually just pull around a utility trailer with a quad in it. I'm renting a toy hauler travel trailer and had to have an electric brake controller. Th best price quote I got was 150$ labor and the retail price of the controller! I was looking at $400 or so. I watched a YouTube video and saw how easy it was so I ordered the controller and the truck specific cable. The cable connection was idiot proof! I located the unit to the right of the steering column. I spent more time waiting for my rechargeable drill to come alive to pilot the two little screws that hold it on! It could not be easier. It powered up automatically. Set up looks easy. I haven't plugged it into the rental trailer yet (in a couple weeks) so I cannot comment on performance but I am very confident that it will work as advertised. It irks me how much the Dodge dealer wanted for such an easy installation. Save yourself some money and time- do it yourself. I'd say the installation on a truck with a trailer package is about as complicated as changing you wiper inserts. 264791

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This etrailer part "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" is a PERFECT fit for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Tekonsha P3 brake controller. After a LOT of research I discovered that in the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ series (1999-2004) the 2001 model with "factory installed tow package", was the only year that did not have the 'the tucked away blue wire running back to the 7-pin trailer connector at the rear of the car. Instead a prewired connector was installed. According to the Jeep WJ users site, the Mopar part #56020142AB (wire harness with the appropriate connector for 2001 Jeep GC) had been discontinued, but Tekonsha Corp. (brake controller manufacturer) had a suitable replacement part. The page link on WJ Jeeps to the correct part at Tekonsha was broken and a search of Tekonsha's website produced no wiring that would even remotely help. After crawling under my dash and removing the electrical fuse cover I found a blue connector. I took a photo of the connector so that I hopefully could find a connector that would help me avoid a complete engine compartment to rear bumper wiring installation. Here on etrailer I found the brake controller I wanted and started looking at what I needed to make it operational. I tried everything I could think of (including writing the etrailer tech) to find out if the "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P would work for my 2001 Jeep. No one was certain. Sooo... I decided that at a cost of $14.99 it was worth it to buy - try - and return if necessary. I also figured if 'worst-came-to-worse' I may want to cut off the Dodge connector and use this shielded wire set instead of Tekonsha's wire harness by snipping off the Dodge connector. 5 minutes out of the box my Tekonsha P3 was lit up and a test light confirmed I had power to the factory installed 7-pin trailer connector at the rear using this etrailer part. It snapped into both connections perfectly. The 30" length sounded adequate, but looked short out of the box. It turns out I have many mounting options with this length. Although it may not be mounted for a day or 2, I've decided to mount it on the left side of the steering wheel column. That's well out of the way of my long legs and yet in easy reach for manually engaging the trailer brake with the hand lever on my brake controller while driving. I would recommend "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" for ANY brake controller installed in a 2001 Jeep GC with the factory installed Mopar/Dodge connector. Just cut off the Tekonsha connector and butt connect the harnesses: BLUE to trailer connector * WHITE to ground - * RED to BRAKE switch (or recommended brake pedal connection point) * BLACK to battery + Attached photos: original Mopar brake controller harness for factory installed tow package 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; etrailer's photo of the dodge connector for Tekonsha controller for visual comparison; a photo of the connector found under my dash; a photo of etrailer part #3020-P connected to my underdash connector; a photo showing the reach of the cable for a possible dash mount; and a photo showing the possible reach for a hidden ash tray mount. 175397

What a fantastic experience I had purchasing my brake controller from etrailer.com!! I called from my vacation in the middle of a small town of Wallowa, Oregon, and spoke to Tayler K., she helped me with my purchase and expedited my order. I was stuck with no trailer brakes and needed to drive over a mountain pass within two days. With Tayler K.'s help, my brake controller arrived in less than 24 hours!! That is excellent customer service. The controller I purchased, the Tekonsha Prodigy P3, is fantastic and gave me the perfect boost and brake control I needed to go over the mountian passes, with my 40' 5th wheel. Thank you again Tayler K. and etrailer for your great service. Wade 681702

Product arrived ahead of estimated date. As I was replacing an older Tekonsha unit, I just used the existing mounting bracket rather than either of the new brackets. I also ordered the truck specific cable/plug assembly so that I just had to plug it in. Have not yet towed with the new control, but for sure it will be easier to set up and adjust when needed than the old unit which just had a single bi color LED. This is my second order from etrailer, and in both cases they arrived in fine shape and on time or early. Price was the same as at that big box online site, but etrailer has employees who can answer technical questions about the products, and they have excellent informational videos. With that other site, you are on you own. You couldn't find anyone there with product knowledge if your life depended on it. 664906

Bought this product a year ago after upgrading to a 35’ fifth wheel weighing 12,900 from a 31’ travel trailer weighing half as much. The old brake controller wasn’t up to the task that the newer one provided. Only one problem with the installation as electrical connection did not want to connect properly. Installed two new batteries in my truck and the electrical changeover of installing the new batteries rectified the problem. It has been a great addition and tremendously increased stopping power and even advised me when I had a problem on my fifth wheel brakes.I highly recommend this product! 655995

Read reviews from others and actually found a local guy who had one of these. From all this feedback, I decided to buy this Tekonsha P3. WOW, what a difference from my old brake controller. Have pulled our 37 feet 5th Wheel RV twice now, and I certainly tell a difference with the trailer brakes. Much more confidence is stopping distance and response of trailer brakes with this controller. Would highly recommend. 649737

The plug-in adapter needed to install this brake controller on your 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 is part # 3020-P. Then for a 7-Way you need the Tow Ready # 30717 and some wiring. If you only need the brake controller function then you simply need to route...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for 1996 Dodge Ram 2500
  • A 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 would not have came with a factory installed brake controller. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. This will be the last brake controller you buy. It can...

  • Will Brake Controller Rated for Two Brake Axles Work on Tandem Axle Trailer
  • Yes, if you only ever plan to tow up to a 2 axle trailer then a brake controller that is rated for up to two brake assemblies would work just fine. The Tekonsha PowerTrac part # 39523 would be a great option for this as it is our best selling controller for up to 2 axles. To install it in your 1997 Dodge Ram would only require the install harness part # 3020-P.

  • Troubleshooting No Power to Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller 39510 in 2001 Dodge Ram 2500
  • It sounds like your 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 has a factory-installed 7-way and that your Voyager brake controller # 39510 is installed using wiring adapter # 3020-P, which connects under the dash. This 4-wire harness carries the +12V power to opeate the controller (black wire), the brake light switch signal that triggers it when you press the brake pedal (red wire), the output for the brakes that goes to the 7-way (blue wire) and the ground (white wire). You can use a circuit tester like...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500
  • The Mopar brake controller is identical to the one they put in at the factory on certain Ram trucks. It is made specifically to fit the trucks it was designed for. In the aftermarket options there is nothing that is going to fit the same but they are also much, much less expensive and actually work better than factory integrated controllers. I recommend the P2, # 90885, because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. You will also need wiring harness # 3020-P to plug the controller...

This plugs into the port under your dash which makes installing the controller very easy. If you don't have a factory 7-way way you will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # 118323. From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you...

Since it sounds like you do not have any trailer wiring on your truck you'll need to start with a 4-way # 118329. • How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Without Factory 7-Way Trailer Wiring
  • The best option on Jeep vehicles without a factory 7-way is to use the # ETBC7 brake controller installation kit that you purchased, see instructions link. The 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee without tow package may have the connector under the dash from the factory, but, if present, it most likely is not fully functional. Actually the colors get changed because there is some engineering change that causes them to make wire color changes. Your truck must be one of the models that has an alternate wiring harness that the colors were changed on. • What is Needed to Power Electric Trailer Brakes with 2002 Dodge Dakota
  • Yes. You need an electric brake controller to power the trailer's brakes. A brake controller installs in the cab of the tow vehicle and connects to its trailer wiring and stop light switch. This way when you step on your brake pedal to apply the vehicle's brakes a signal is sent from the vehicle's stop light switch to the brake controller. The controller then sends power to the trailer's brakes through the 7-way trailer connector. I've linked an article on brake controllers you can...
