Video Transcript for Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap for Hitch-Mounted Accessories, part number 18050.This strap helps reduce stress on your hitch and hitch-mounted accessories. It does this by alleviating the excess tongue weight created when hitch-mounted accessories bounce. It attaches between your vehicle and your accessory, lifting that accessory relieving that up-and-down action. Here without the strap installed, you can see the up-and-down action that we can potentially get when going over rough terrain. With the strap installed, you can see how that is significantly reduced. Curt recommends this for all non-trailer loads, things like bike racks and cargo carriers. When installing on your hanging-style bike rack, you want to take the looped end, find a secure point on the head of the bike rack.

We'll bring the buckle through the loop along with the keeper, pull it tight. Then, we'll take the hook end. Now, it is rubber coated, so we don't have to worry about harming or scratching the finish of our vehicle, and we're going to attach it to the top of our rear hatch or the back of our trunk. Then, we'll take the two ends and connect them together. We'll come up through the underside of the Cam buckle and we're going to pull it nice and tight, and to get the most out of your strap you can even pick up on your bike rack to take out that extra play.

Then, we'll just clean up our excess strap, bring it around, and use the hook-and-loop to keep it all together, and then you're all set.You can also use it with your platform-style bike rack. With it installed, you could see how stable it is. It's the same principle. Curt shows the strap installed on the outermost bike. Some of our customers are also installing it on the upright mast.

You can choose whichever works best for your application. Here, we're using our strap with our cargo carrier. This will help limit the up-and-down movement of the cargo carrier when you're going over rough terrain. With this setup, we have it looped around the front rail of the cargo carrier. One of our customers, Elizabeth A, says "The strap helped to stabilize the bike rack . strong and sturdy. If you get the bike rack & hitch, spend the extra for this .. Worked great on my 2013 VW Beetle convertible."Keep in mind the strap is intended to be used along with your anti-rattle bolt, not instead of.We ran a few accessories through our test course with and without the strap.

Here it is with our hanging-style bike rack. You'll notice how much less movement we have . now with our platform rack. Now with our cargo carrier there's not that much difference in movement, but at least you have the peace of mind in knowing that you have extra support. That's going to complete our look at the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap for Hitch-Mounted Accessories, part number 18050.

Might work for cars with metal hatch/trunk lid. My Volvo V60 has a plastic spoiler mounted (not aftermarket) at the top end of the hatch. So attaching the support strap would likely damage the plastic. 190909

Got these because it said that if using a hitch mounted rack and not a trailer it should be used with straps. Ordered a pack and have not used them yet but found out it is one strap per pack so order multiple if you need more than one. If it was on the package I missed it, I don't believe it was there though. 397249

We were very impressed with the quality of the Curt Trailer hitch we purchased, its price and how quickly it arrived. We had the hitch installed by a very good local mechanic for a fraction of the cost quoted by our Honda dealer. The hitch support strap that was recommended works perfectly with this hitch. We highly recommend this hitch to anyone. 96112

The eTrailer Hitch support strap really makes a difference when my bike is mounted on the Thule trailer hitch assembly. Provides a smoother ride, taking away the slight (but irritating) vibration that is inherent in any horizontal trailer hitch assembly. This was not available at my bike shop, so etrailer.com is the way to go. 152500

This is the second of these straps I have purchased from etrailer.com. They do a great job of stabilizing my hitch-mount bike rack. My wife got a new SUV that does not accommodate a strap in the center of the hatch... only on the sides. On her old SUV, one strap (in the center) would stabilize the rack, but now I need two. I have previously placed several orders with etrailer.com, all of which went perfectly. This latest order was handled fine and arrived earlier than expected. Kudos to etrailer.com for good products and prompt service. 554385

I use use a Curt Hitch "Flat Carrier" https://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Cargo-Carrier/Curt/C18110.html for loads on my 2005 Prius. Bought the recommended support strap and liked the way it took the up-down bounce stress off the hitch, but the carrier still wobbled left to right, rotating slightly within the hitch receiver. Bought a second strap and the two stabilized the load very nicely. I needed a light cord between the two straps at the top of the hatch door to encourage them not to slide off the corners of the door. 433426

Comments

I am quite pleased with our flat carrier. We keep the loads low enough & centered enough to not block the brake lights and the license plate. Weve used it to carry bikes as well.

I wish other online vendors would take note of the excellent website interface, communication, and follow up provided by etrailer.com. Accurate detailed description of item and timely shipping were appreciated. It's so nice to see the shipping map showing where the package is. The hitch arrived in perfect condition and fit my car perfectly. Including the how to installation video with the shipping notification was the icing on the cake. 421553

The product works as intended if you add a couple knots to it. The simple clasp is not enough to stop my Swagman G10 bike rack from swaying forward and backward. With the gentle acceleration of my Honda Civic Hybrid starting from a stop, the strap gets pulled through the clasp. If I set it up, strap through the clasp, then tie a couple, simple knots in the strap behind the clasp using the clasp as a base, this product works perfectly fine. Traveling tightens the knots, and so I just leave them tied and slip the loop off the rack when I'm done, leaving this product ready for the next time I use it. 454072

The hitch arrived very quickly and in good condition. The plan is to use if mainly for a hitch-bike rack, but it's nice to know I can pull a load, too. While I have not used it, yet, the installation was pretty much problem-free. The most difficult part was actually getting the nuts on the bolts above the muffler - awkward angle. Had nothing to do with the hitch, it's just the location where it had to go. My brother came up with a helpful hint before we raised the hitch up that folks might find helpful. We took some jumbo paperclips and used them to secure (just opened it and then twisted it around the top of the visible bolt) the bolt from moving up into the frame. Was a little concerned that in lining up the holes an accidental "bump" might knock the bolt up into the frame. Worked fine and then we just pulled out the paperclip (leave it long on one end) with some pliers. Everything seems pretty secure and ready for use. 191605

I bought this rack for several reasons, including its price point and light weight. I also like where its designed and made. The American flag on the back is a nice touch. I also wanted a solid platform rack that would hold two bikes securely for long road trips and highway speeds. I didn't see much need for a heavier tilt-away rack since I can easily access the rear of my small hatchback through the back the seats. This hitch is easy to assemble and ready to go in minutes. Its light weight makes it easy to slide into the hitch and the threaded hitch pin holds the rack tight. I also bought a cheap socket wrench and a deep 19mm socket to keep in the car. There is still a small amount of side to side wobble when the bikes are loaded, but not much. You won't notice any wobble when driving unless the road is really rough. Be sure to check out ETrailer's road test video of this rack. This is a good sturdy rack. I also got the hitch strap that Curt recommends to secure the center upright support to the car. I also recommend getting the Saris locking hitch pin and cable combo with matching keys. This rack does not fold up completely because the hitch arm is fixed, but its still light and easy to move around and store. And you could always take the hitch arm off for longer term winter storage. It does take some fiddling to get the tire mounts and drop bar mounts lined up for each bike so if you have four different bikes like I do, you'll find yourself doing that quite often. Eventually I will memorize the locations for each or mark them somehow on the rack. My two large road bikes fit like a glove but I could see there being some difficulty with getting seats and handle bars to clear sometimes, which means more time fiddling with the mounts when loading up a friend's bike. I also like how well centered the bikes are and how little side overhang I'm able to achieve, which is also important for long road trips and highway speeds (less drag = better mpg). All of my bikes are well centered and only my big 29" mountain bike with its long wheelbase sticks out to the side much. On the downside, but not for me, it does take some strength to lift the inside bike up and over the center support, and doing so carefully without hitting the back of your car. This could be a problem for some, especially if you have a big heavy townie or mountain bike. This is also dependent on how high your hitch receiver is off the ground. Mine happens to be very low to the ground so I don't have to lift the bikes as high as I would on a larger SUV for example. So other platform racks may be a better choice if you're concerned about lifting your bike up to or over shoulder height just to get it on the rack. To sum it up, the Saris Freedom 2 is a great rack for a good price and I couldn't be happier with my purchase, and for all the great info and advice from the wonderful people at Etrailer.com to make it so easy! Etrailer rocks! 347111

Bought a Curt Class 1 hitch for my 2009 VW GTI. Curt specifies having this strap for carrying bike racks with their light weight hitch. I will not use it most of the time since I normally only carry one bike. But, I am planning to drive from Colorado to Pennsylvania with both my bikes on the rack, so I spent the $9 to get the strap to help take some of the stress off the hitch for that long drive. My GTI has a spoiler at the top of the hatch, so I need to have some non-scratching material between the strap and the paint. I am not worried about causing too much pressure on the spoiler since the strap is designed to assist the hitch, not carry the entire weight like a hatch mounted bike rack does. eTrailers has a few great videos to show you how this is installed and works. It's a small price to pay for a little piece of mind. 141040

I just installed the piece. It was not an easy job to do by myself at home, but it was not impossible either. With a little wrangling - some supports and shims I was able to put it together nicely. Next project the wire harness. Wish me luck please. John 37950

Great product, very solid. Installation was more complicated than others I've done in the past (cutting the heat shield and opening up the mounting holes), but still only took us about an hour and a half. We had no troubles towing a Sea-Doo, and will be using it to mount a bike rack. I also purchased the recommended support strap for the bike rack. 372749

Straps were the right ones for a long distance trip with our 18084 Curt platform bike rack. I have a Lincoln MKX on which you cannot put the strap over the rear door as directed in the installation instructions and on-line video. This is as a result of the deflector and seal on the door. I purchased two straps and connected one to each side of the rear door. We then traveled over 1200 with two bikes and they never moved. Perfect. We are very happy with our purchase. Further, etrailer and its people are a pleasure with whom to deal. THANK YOU. 155691

Works just as advertised. We are using this with a Thule rear mount bike hitch carrier. I am a little concerned about the stress that is placed on the lip of the lift gate (hatchback). When the strap is snug and the vehicle goes over bumps, this could place a good bit of stress on the lip of the liftgate where the vinyl-coated hook goes. What would be great is if the vinyl coated hook was wider--maybe 3" wide. This would distribute the load on the edge of the liftgate and the lip of the liftgate would be less likely to bend. I suggest buying a RoadMaster Quiet Hitch (RM-061) to go along with this strap. The RM-061 snugs up the bike carrier in the hitch so that there is no "play" when going over bumps. I would recommend this to others. 103605

I got this strap in anticipation of acquiring a trailer hitch hanging bike rack. The bike rack has not gotten here yet but I can see the advantages of stabilizing the bike rack due to dynamic forces on the trailer hitch created by the motion of my car acting through the long bike rack arm. I could see where the forces could easily exceed the specifications of the trailer hitch. The only doubt I have is the reliability of the stitching that secures the webbing to the metal hook and cam-lock buckle. Time will tell. 358330

I purchased the following for a Scion xB 2012: C12490 Curt hitch 118460 T-one wire harness 63155 Pro series cargo carrier 20174 Light kit for cargo carrier 59102 Rolm cargo bag xxxxx Strap for Curt hitches This was for a trip from central NY to the FL keys. Had 2 issues, neither of which were etrailer.com's fault. First after deciding to put a hitch on the car after three winters the threads were rusted enough where i could not do it myself. had to take it to my mechanic to get that mounted, so keep that in mind if you are buying later in the car's life as I did. The second was the lights that attached to carrier. The video said there would be some play in the grommet when they were installed, but that they would not fall out. There was a lot more play than I was comfortable with so i taped them in place with some foil tape. Was just not willing to take the chance that they fall out along the way. The only complaint I had was that I was told I would need a strap for Curt hitches that would take some weight off the hitch, if you didn't use it, your warranty could be voided. I bought it and used it, but its just a webbed strap that i don't see how much good that did because no matter how tight you got it the strap just stretched. I felt a little scammed on that one. This was with a cargo carrier, now I could see that being useful on a bike carrier attached to the hitch, but using it on the cargo carrier seemed a bit of a scam to me. But for $8/9 plus shipping i wasn't going to void the warranty. Other than those issues, everything worked perfect and etrailer.com was so easy to research items on, purchase from, shipping was quick, and the sales people were always following up so see if you are good (and to get you to write a review). I will definitely use them again and would highly recommend them to anyone in the market for towing products. Thanks. 187758

Install was very easy, instructions were clear. Be sure to use WD-40 to loosen up the muffler attachments. That one step alone made this job easier than I expected. This hitch is used to attach a goal post, so I can carry my kayaks on top. Great customer service, the best. 360109

This is a needed addition for support, if you think about it the further a lift is extended beyond the hitch with weight (powerchair) the weight is multiplied so the strap relieves some of that so that the hitch doesn't fail, just don't like that on a Chrysler 300 the only attachment point is the leading edge of trunk lid so that extra care not to damage paint is needed on checked frequently, just a heads up for all you buyers out there! 240180

I found this strap to be a necessary addition for the hitch mount bike rack. It makes the bike rack much more stable in the hitch. It relieves stress at the hitch by keeping the rack from rocking for and aft when you go over bumps in the road and you have the weight of two bikes on board. it's worth the small extra cost. 678155

  • 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Hitch Comparison Curt vs. EcoHitch
  • The Ecohitch part # 306-X7365 and the Curt hitch part # C13382 are both USA made 2 inch hitches confirmed as a fit for your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. The biggest difference is the removable lower section that the Ecohitch has which means that when you don't need the hitch you won't see it at all. The Curt does not have this so the hitch is visible at all times. Because of that the price difference is pretty large since that feature is more expensive and highly desired. The other thing to...

  • Is It Possible to Install Trailer Hitch on 2006 K-Z Escalade Trailer
  • It is absolutely possible to install a trailer hitch on your 2006 K-Z Escalade trailer; it will only require that your trailer have a box frame, C-channel frame, or I-beam frame that is between 22 inches and 72 inches wide. Should your trailer have that you will be able to use the Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs # 13703 which will can either bolt or weld onto your trailer's frame. This is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver but please keep in mind it will require...

  • Kuat Transfer 2.0 vs Swagman XTC-2 for a 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI
  • You've narrowed it down to two extremely good racks. You are right about how the distance of the bikes on the rack interacts with their stability. The closer the bikes are to the vehicle, the less sway and bounce they experience as they travel. I have not seen a Kuat Transfer, part # TS02G mounted on a 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI. I did go out to our warehouse and measure the Kuat Transfer and the Swagman XTC, part # S64670 to give you an idea of their clearances. We use a stacking...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2017 Audi A4
  • First, for a trailer hitch, I recommend # DT24950 for your 2017 Audi A4. I recommend this one over Curt hitch # C11448 because the Curt hitch requires a stabilization strap, # 18050, when using the hitch with a bike rack and the Draw-Tite hitch does not. I have included a picture showing where the fascia trimming is required to install the hitch. It is a small section underneath the vehicle that is not visible (unless you are under the vehicle). This this or any Class I trailer hitch...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2015 BMW X5
  • We have two options for trailer hitches for a 2015 BMW X5 that will fit all their motor and package options. The options are the Curt Class III 2 inch, # 13077, and the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2 inch, # 75600. Both trailer hitches will require fascia trimming, but will not require any drilling into your frame. Both hitches are very good quality and will hold up very well. I recommend the Draw-Tite option based on the look and the fact that it does not...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2018 Toyota CH-R
  • Unfortunately we don't have any videos on your 2018 CH-R for a trailer hitch at this time. I've attached a link to all the Toyota trailer hitch videos we do have to possibly be of some assistance. For this vehicle, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24962 which installs at the same location as the Curt hitch # C11490 which is also a fit for this vehicle. Both require the removal of the bumper/fascia to install the hitch prior...

  • Hitch Mounted Bike Rack for Electra Townies on a 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 Wagon
  • You will need both a trailer hitch receiver, if you don't already have one, and a platform-style bike rack to carry your Townie Electra step through. Townie Electras don't have a frame that is normally compatible with traditional racks, so you usually need to have a platform style rack to better support the bikes' frames. For a hitch, you'll want to pick up the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # C11404. This is a htich that will require drilling to install, but is the best fit...

  • Why Does Curt Require Stabilizer Strap When Carrying Bike Rack and Not Draw Tite
  • I have spoke with my contact at Curt numerous times regarding the requirement of the stabilizing/support strap, # 18050. Curt requires this strap in order to alleviate the leveraging affect that a non-trailer load places on a hitch like part # C13195. At Curt they like to use the example of carrying a gallon of milk. Think of the strain that would be put on your arm if it is extended opposed to if you carry the milk close to your body. This is what also happens with a hitch when a bike...

  • Where on Trailer Frame to Measure for Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch for RVs
  • Thanks for all those measurements! There is a trailer hitch that will work great for your travel trailer, though the measurement you want to go with is from outside to outside, which you said was 70-1/2 inches. That means the correct hitch is the Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs, 22" to 72" Wide # 13703. This is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver and 350 lb tongue weight capacity so you will be able to carry a good deal of cargo with it. For a cargo carrier on the rear...

  • Comparing Draw-Tite # 76128 and Curt # C13397 for 2017 Honda CR-V
  • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 76128 and the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13397 are very similar in style and function. They are both easy to install and will work well with accessories. The biggest difference is the Curt hitch is rated for less weight and requires fascia trimming for installation. The Curt hitch also recommends using the support strap # 18050 for any non-trailer load, but the Draw-Tite does not require this. The strap...

  • Why is Stabilization Strap Required to Use a Bike Rack in a Curt Trailer Hitch on a 2017 Honda CR-V
  • The use of the stabilization strap # 18050 is purely a Curt construct for their warranty requirements. The hitch, in this case # C12169, can handle a loaded 2 bike rack but if you don't use the strap it voids the hitch warranty. If you do not want to use the strap then the only remaining option is Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 36597. I have also included a video that shows how the strap works if you choose to go with the Curt hitch.

  • There is a security hitch pin for you to use with Curt Cargo Carrier # C18153 the # 853-5210-02 you referenced is for Thule bike carriers and load bars. Instead you could secure the cargo carrier to your hitch with the Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # 63232. The carrier will not break but for peace of mind I do recommend using Curt Trailer Hitch Support Strap # 18050. This will give your carrier the extra support you're looking for; I've linked a video which shows exactly how...

There isn't room to replace the brackets that were removed to install the hitch. It does not appear to be an issue with Draw-Tite hitch # 24933 and I have linked that video for you as well. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory...

  • Is Trimming Of Fascia On 2017 Chevrolet Spark Required When Installing Trailer Hitch
  • You are correct. The photos of the trailer hitch installations do appear as though the hitch receiver is below the fascia. Since the fascia wraps under the vehicle the trimming is done on the underside so the receiver can fit. I have attached a photo of the fascia that shows how much is trimmed on the underside for the Curt Hitch, part # C11433. I checked with Curt and they do not list the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11474 as a fit so I cannot recommend this. The powder coat on the Curt hitches tends to be a little better and the Curt hitches are made in the USA.
