Options that include an inner garnish help the interior look clean and complete, but sizes can differ from the original so confirm your cutout. Plan for enough sealant—more than one tube may be needed—and some installs use butyl tape under screw holes with lap sealant on top.
Not all square skylights include sealant or screws. Some kits do not come with the tube of caulk shown, and one tube may not be enough. Plan on butyl tape under screw holes and lap sealant on top; 2 to 3 tubes can be needed to complete the job. If hardware isn't listed, add an installation kit for screws and extra sealant.
Tighten it evenly and use all the screws, then seal thoroughly. Thin domes can want to pop up between screws, so add steady pressure as you fasten and don't over-space fasteners. Butyl under the flange helps fill gaps, and a generous lap sealant bead over the perimeter and screw heads helps reduce lift and leaks.
Match the skylight to your roof opening and outside flange footprint. A square skylight can fit perfect, but some find the new unit a bit bigger than the original cutout. Measure both the hole and the space around it. If you want a finished interior look, choose a skylight that includes an inner garnish or add one to match your ceiling depth.
Use butyl tape under the screw holes and finish the top with lap sealant. Self-leveling products can make a smoother finish; thick, sticky caulks can be hard to spread and leave stringy bumps. Lay a continuous bead and go back around each screw head. Have enough tubes on hand so you don't run short mid-job.
