Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, first bolt the included RV post to the Companion's base. This post is what inserts into your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. The RV post attaches to the base in 1 of 2 ways to allow for improved cab clearance and proper positioning over your truck's axle.

Once you have the post in place on the base, position the base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The RV post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

To tighten the connection between your Turnoverball hitch and the Companion, torque down the integrated drop-down bolt. This bolt runs through the crossmember of the Companion base and then down through the RV post. When you tighten the drop-down bolt, the base will be pulled closer to your truck bed, creating a more substantial connection. This, along with the wide stance of the hitch's base, helps to ensure maximum stability when you're towing.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you the cab clearance needed to execute turns while towing.

Note: If you have a short bed truck, you may want to use the B&W Companion Slider hitch (BWRVK3400 - sold separately) instead of the standard Companion. This fifth-wheel trailer hitch, which also adapts your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch, incorporates a slider that gives you an extra 12" of fore/aft movement to ensure proper cab clearance when executing turns.

Companion 3500 Base Diagram

To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base. The above diagram gives an indication of where to mount the arms so that you get the height and the cab clearance that you need.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Love this hitch. It has performed great with my 17,000 lb trailer all year. A very stable and reliable platform for towing. Easy to set up and plenty of adjustment to get the trailer just right. The only negative is the weight, not the easiest to get in and out of the truck by yourself.

I decided to buy the Champion fifth wheel hitch to pull a fifth wheel camper, my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 already had a B&W goose neck hitch in it. The champion hitch allowed me to also have a fifth wheel hitch with out drilling and mounting more weight to the truck. The instructions for assembly were clear and easy to follow making the assembly of the hitch easy. The hitch fit snug and there is no play in it. The 26' fifth wheel camper pulled nicely, no surging or swaying.

Very good I have towed a fifth wheel camper, it tows very nicely, there is no play in the hitch in the goose neck adapter, and no slop in the fifth wheel at the trailer

Make sure to have two people for installation. The only reason this is a must is due to the weight of the items and safety. The installation was not bad, the only item that is worth mentioning to watch for is near the end of the installation instructions. The jaws release lever has two bolts to hold it onto the receiver plate itself. The top is a rounded head with allen wrench style fittings. Unfortunately even though it seems like the allen wrench would hold the minute you put any torque on the nut it spins. I ended up replacing both immediately before fully tightening to ensure the handle was solid in place. As both bolts have no load or weight to them this was an easy decision to make. Everything you can tell is built solid and is pure steel, this thing should not go anywhere! Also to note I have my height adjustment for the plate at the highest setting and my tonneau cover still fully covers the truck bed without touching!

It has been great, no issues and still pulling my fifth wheel without any incident. I did have to adjust the plate down all the way but that was to even out the trailer angle to raise backend of camper more so as not to hit back end on anything. Easy enough if you have a torque power drill to take all the bolts off and move, then just make sure to use torque wrench again to the 80lbs required.

Hitch arrived on time. Packaging was a little beat up but everything inside was fine. I did the installation myself and had no issues. The install video etrailer made was a big help and good reference. I'd absolutely recommend getting this hitch if you have a gooseneck hitch and are looking for a 5th wheel hitch that can be used with it.

by:

I tow a 16000 lb fifth wheel and this adapter works perfectly. It's easy to hook up and I had a RV place in Arizona install it and they did so for less than $100. The tow rating on this is about 20 thousand pounds I believe so I'm well within the limits Towing this trailer. I would highly recommend this product for anyone who is towing a fifth-wheel within the rated tow range.

its been an excellent hitch. I pulled the trailer about eight to ten Thousand Miles without a problem with a hitch. Im thinking about getting a larger fifth wheel so I imagine Ill have to have a hitch that will pull a 24,000 pound trailer right? No doubt you have them no I havent checked your site. Its a little early yet. Thank you for your follow-up I appreciate it.

by:

It’s been a great gooseneck to fifth wheel trailer hitch. Easy to setup and remove when I need my full 8’ bed To haul items. Also like the feature I can remove the 5th wheel plate so easy. Been pulling my 5th wheel for a year and no regrets buying this product.

Arrived in about 4 days. I ordered it on a Friday evening so that was pretty quick for free shipping. Installed it in about two hrs.took our first trip with the new 5th wheel hitch and it is awesome. It doesn't make any clunky noise when starting and stopping. Well worth every penny.

It was easy to put together and install. I'll be using this for my 40' travel trailer. I'm happy with my purchase!

by:

I appreciated advice when ordering and decided on the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailed Hitch Adapter. Delivery was super fast. I ordered after 5:00 pm on Thursday and the package was in front of the garage by noon on Friday. My wife said that was faster than Amazon! Instructions were detailed well, so after purchasing a torque wrench, I was good to go. I watched a video also, as being from Missouri, I have to be showed! The quality seems to be great. By Saturday noon, I was able to hook up to our 5th wheel RV.
Thanks so much!

by:

Great quality merch. Fast delivery. Videos and pics on the website helped tremendously with installation.

by:

Very well fabricated addition to my truck. As stated, suggests two people during install. I didn't have that luxury, so install was a bit slower for me. Still doable by all aspects. Would happily recommend this product.

Excellent product. Easy to hook-up, and have yet to find a binding angle to where disconnecting is challenging. We have put many miles on our 5th wheel with my wife being a traveling ER nurse. This Spring, we went from NW Arkansas to South Dakota with zero issues. Will be relocating from SD, to Washington in a month. Amazing receiver. Do the regular maintenance on it, and it will provide years of worry-free use!

by:

I’m very satisfied with this installation was easy best of all I didn’t lose the use of my gooseneck ball. This was a lot easier than replacing my pinbox

by:

Love the ability to remove the 5th wheel portion relatively easily when its not needed; giving me full use of the truck's bed. Definitely heavy enough for my 40' luxury 5th wheel trailer.

by:

Great product. I had a B&W goose neck hitch already installed in my truck. I needed a 5th wheel hitch as well. This product is designed to go into the exact mount that was already installed for the gooseneck.

This B&W 5th wheel adapter from gooseneck ball receiver is amazing. Very convenient and easy to switch out.

by:

My hitch was shipped within hours of my order! Gre@t customer service!

by:

Great hitch. Not hard to install or assemble. It is heavy but manageable. Very heavy duty. Easy to remove when not in use so your bed is available for hauling.

by:

This gooseneck adapter has performed flawlessly, as I expected from B&W products. Installation was relatively easy and hook up has been a breeze.

by:

I like the gooseneck to 5th-wheel adapter portion of this 5th-wheel hitch. There are no mounting rails in the bed to interfere with cargo when not using the 5th-wheel hitch. Heavy construction(built to last), which makes it a little difficult to install and remove, but there are ways of getting around that.

by:

What a great product. The installation was easy and the security you can feel when it hooks up to your fifth wheel is great with just a glance you can see that it is safely locked in place.

Jeff

The hitch is fabulous, when it is hooked up it performs super, the security and solid hook up feels great. Upon our return from overseas we lived in our fifth wheel for a year and did a lot of towing. I did have to put a pulley in my garage to assist in removing and loading the hutch as its 220 lb weigh made it impossible for me to do by myself. With the pulley it’s a simple job.

by:

Great Product.
No issue with install
or removal when not needed.
use of over head mechanical lifting devise is recommended, if not breaking it down.
Always remember to install safety latch pin in receiver handle prior to moving any load.
great delivery time of product from manufacture.

by:

Came Early! Solid construction and trusted brand. Love their customer service and their products. This hitch is our first fifth wheel hitch from them, but not our first hitch from them. Would love to try more of what they have to offer.

by:

Bought truck used with the BW turnover ball installed. Purchased Companion hitch the set-up and instructions are really easy to follow. It took me an absolute novice, less than an hour to put the whole thing together. The frame portion is heavy at 130 pounds so definitely a two person job to move it around but once it was put together I just dropped it in the hole and shut the latch pin and then tightened the draw bolt and it was good to go! When attaching the handle i noticed the flange nuts were crimped just enough that the bolt would not thread through, so I had to purchase two 3/8" flange nuts at the local hardware store to replace but 10 minutes and $1.20 to replace was no big deal. I did contact the manufacturer with the package lot number so they could check their inventory. They were very helpful and apologetic. They even offered to send out replacement nuts right away. Definitely a solid product and I am so glad I purchased this.

by:

Love it. Fits and Works like a Dream. Love that it slides right into my Gooseneck Hitch.

Wonderful it never let me down working just as new as the first day I got it installed

by:

I have owned this hitch for a year. It has performed flawlessly. A lot of people elect to change out their pin box to a goose box because they don't want anything in their bed when not towing. When this one is removed there is nothing in the bed. Yes, it is heavy, but when I have to pull it out I use the 5th wheel to lift it out. Not a problem for me.

  • Tip for Removing Stuck B and W Turnoverball Hitch Ball
Gooseneck ball shanks like what the Companion hitch part # BWRVK3500 uses to connect to the truck bed sometimes can be difficult to release if left installed for a length of time. Best option is to get underneath truck bed and spray penetrating lube like WD40 everywhere you can near the ball and the release levers. It also helps to do this from the top of the hitch as well. Let it soak for a bit and see if that helps release it. You might also hit the ball shank with a rubber mallet to...

You cannot use the B&W Companion # BWRVK3500 with the Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin # RP34FR due to the single mounting point of the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BWGNRK1320. The gooseneck hitch unlike the factory has a stowable design so you can leave the hitch ball in the bed while not in use for full bed access and it has a square shank which helps cut down on movement and the chance of the hitch...
